I mean, not just the usual ” tourist” places…

Just wondering if you have visited all the usual tourist places already?

I lived in Dublin most of my life and never visited any of the tourist places. It was only when I left Ireland 15 years ago and started to visit on holidays that I finally got around to going to the places that I didn’t even notice. Dublin has so much to offer that us locals do not see (or saw on some school tour when we were 10 and didn’t really care).

First of all, check out these museums/galleries

      National Museum at Collins Barracks
      Douglas Hyde Gallery
      The National Gallery
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (although when I was there, I wasn’t that impressed).

    Then visit

      Kilmainham Goal – amazing!
      Dublin Castle

Then head on out to the country to Tara and Newgrange.
    Take a bus to Howth.

What about a PI Trip to the pubs and places that were suggested so far… all in one day? I think it would be fun, and we promise, we wouldn’t be too much bother, Alessia. What about this Saturday?

Take a trip up to the Hugh Lane gallery on Parnell Square for the Francis Bacon exhibition. Definitely worth a look……!

It might be irrelevant to the event… a walk on Howth starting from the Harbour, going around on the cliff walk until the lighthouse, back up to Howth Summit, having some battered cod and a few pints of the black stuff in the pub there is a good way to spend a day like today… enjoy!

Make sure you take in the Long Hall too, a mere stones throw from Peter’s Pub.

And if you are out for the night, I believe the Comedy Club at the International Bar is very good on a Sunday. Alternatively, Jazz upstairs at JJ Smyths usually of a decent standard (also a mere stones throw from Peter’s Pub). Yissers will be well on if you make through all those places.

If I was to recommend a Walking tour of Dublin, I would start at The Millenium Bridge, walk through the Italian quarter (maybe stopping for coffee), turn left along Abbey Street walking alongside the Luas track, through Capel Street, onto Mary’s Lane and down by the fruit market (always worth a visit if they are open, especially early morning). Keep walking straight, onto Marys Lane which becomes Chancery Street and brings you to the back of the Four Courts, where you may see barristers in fancy capes and scobes in tracksuits emerging from the district court. Keep straight as far as Church St, then take a right and then the next left, this will bring you to the Jameson Distillery site. Don’t bother going in, rather walk through the complex (nice buildings) and come out the otherside onto Smithfield (big old square). Lots of places to check out here, Lighthouse Cinema, Cobblestone Pub, Subway sangwiches…..walk straight across the square and out the otherside of it. This will bring you towards Blackhall Place. Swing a right towards Stoneybatter, but turn left at Arbour Hill. Walk along Arbour Hill as far as Lilliput (unofficially the best shop in Dublin). Order a coffee and toasted Pastrami on Rye and sit on the bench outside the shop, or the Benches across the street. Next door is a gallery called the Joinery, well worth visiting if its open. As is the Lilliput Press around the corner. Take a snoop around the streets of Stoneybatter, Sitric Road, oxmantown Road, some of the best preserved working class streets from Georgian Dublin. From here you could go right up Oxmantown Road, turning left at the North Circular Road into the Phoenix Park, which is always worth a visit. Or you could keep straight along Arbour Hill and turn left into Collins Barracks, a lovely complex (though i find the exhibitions dull, sorry)….outside of which is a Luas stop that will bring you back into town.
