What tele zoom lens? (for a Canon mount)
-
Madra RuaParticipant
I am looking for something to replace my Sigma 70-300 APO.
It’s not a bad lens for the money, but am starting to see where it falls short.I want a lens that’ll give me good results for landscape, wildlife and street photography.
I have been thinking so far about:
Canons’s 70-200 f4 (with or without IS)
Canons’s 70-200 f2.8 (without IS)
Sigma’s 70-200 f2.8
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-f/5.6L IS USM
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO ISDid I miss any contenders?
Regarding the price: I don’t really want to go beyond ?1,000 / $1,400 / ?700
I just saw a used non-IS Canons’s 70-200 f2.8 on offer for ?1,000
Is that a good offer? What is the best choice?…
stcstcMemberi have the 70-200 f4 non is, its razor sharp
although i would not say its a landscape lense its fantastic for wandering around with
i also have a 28-135 is which is a great alround lens, although i must admit it doesnt get as much use as i thought it would
SteveFEMemberFor landscape you wouldn’t really need much past the f/4, but for wildlife you’d definitely find the f/2.8 useful. It’d also be better for street work, although not exactly inconspicuous ;)
MartinParticipantNo little about Cannon as I have always used Nikon
In Photography Monthly October 2007 they did a review on lenses in this range. Below is a summary of what they thought. I’ll bring it to Doolan if you want to have a read
—
Sigma 50-150 APO 2.8 EX DC HSM ?550
Rating 85/100
pros: Good size nice finish 3 year UK warranty, Autofocus quick responsive, quick sharp results
cons: Lose 50mm at long end, gain 20mmm at wide end, APS sensors—
Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX DG Macro ?800
Rating 84/100
Pros: well built with good optical performance and very quick autofocus. good price
Cons: Softer than some of the opposition wide open—
Cannon 70-200 EF F4 L UIS ?750
Rating 82/100
Pros: Good stabilisation at a reasonable price
Cons: Disapointing at the longer focal length—
Cannon 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM ?1300
Rating 91/100
Pros: Fast accurate auto focus and great build quality
Cons: Tripod collar difficult to attach remove—
Cannon 70-200 F4 L USM ?450
Rating 84/100
Pros: Lightweight and compact design. Competitively priced for an L series lens
Cons: Auto focus is a tad slower than the 2.8—
Sigma 100-300 f4 EX HSM DG ?900
Rating 86/100
Pros: Consistent edge to edge results and good handling
Cons: 100mm my be to long especially on cropped sensors—
A few other lenses were reviewed that wont work on a Canon
But if wanted to move over to Nikon :-) the lens that won the test was the:Nikon 70-200 VR 2.8 for ?1200.
Rating 92/100
Pros: Exceptional image quality , rapid autofocus
Cons: Tripos mount can foul some quick release systemsThis is the lens I have and it?s excellent in every way. Nikon is starting to get its act together and is producing the best pro lenses again
Photography Monthly November 2007 reviews the Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS USM ?1410. Supposed to be a great lens but prone to problems with the bearings which jam up the zoom which require an overhaul (this can cost a good bit to repair so get it new with a warranty if interested)
Don?t know if this will be of any use but there you go. Best of luck with your choice (Prices above are Brittish RRP but will be cheaper on ebay)

Madra RuaParticipantThanks guys.
Something to think about.Martin, a bit of a surprise that they should be disapointed with the ‘Canon 70-200 EF F4 L UIS’.
As I always thought it was highly regarded lens.John GriffinParticipanti have the 100-400 5.6 IS and i can’t fault it in any way, its a super sharp lens and i can take cracking images to 1/125 handheld, it a great range. Works for me thats all i can tell you. Have it 3 years now and no problems, next will be 600 f4.

As I always thought it was highly regarded lens.Don’t know much about Canon as I am Nikon person. This magazine can be wrong sometimes. They might have reviewed a bad sample of the lens
For what its worth if it was me i would continue saving until i could get the “Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM” (have patience it will be worth it and you will get years out of it) I have bought allot of lenses over the years. In hind sight if i was doing it all again i would just save for the best lens in each range that i use regularly and go cheap on the bodies.

steelydanParticipantHave to agree with Martin totally..Wait wait and Wait again until you save for what you really want. Dont save a few euros to end up dissapointed and wishing you should have waited.
Madra RuaParticipantOk, that’s that decided so. Caonon 70-200 2.8 IS…
Now, where will I buy it from? US, China, Conn’s?GizzoParticipantuh, seems that I lost this post…

Madra RuaParticipantGizzo, I got a good deal on the Sigma 70-200 f2.8
and I also got myself a 1.4 Sigma APO extender.
I am still trying it out to get the real feel for it.
But I am quite happy so far.
