The travel section is here to allow people to display and discuss/critique photographs shot in a travel context.
As the forum description says, Photographs to capture and positively promote a geographical location in the
style and standard of a travel magazine.Mark
BertieWoosterParticipantI?m really delighted that this section has launched. I imagine that several others have suggested it to Mark, but I also put in a request for it a few days ago ? adding solemn oaths that I?d be very active in the new section.
As I have mentioned already, and probably too often, I am a Business Analyst in the Travel Industry. I have a great love for travel in general. Even at home I have a lot of travel books and magazines, and look forward to the travel supplements in the weekend newspapers.
All this has fostered a growing interest in travel photography. I believe that the approach to travel photography is slightly different from general creative photography. Not very different. And there is no need to make a religion out of the differences. But it is useful to understand the different concepts. For the moment, a summary definition of the difference might be conveyed in the purpose for which the photo is taken. Travel photography is about taking photos to create a desire in the viewer to visit the location. The photos are about presenting the location, about highlighting interesting features, about conveying an atmosphere, about introducing other cultures ? although not all at once in the same photo!
There are at least three or four main groups of serious photographers who might get involved:
1. Some with vague aspirations, like myself, of getting an image or two into a published travel article.
2. Some who want to take better holiday photos.
3. Some who want to shoot that type of stock photography.
4. Some who want to promote their own local region.
5. etcThis new section provides a great opportunity for focussing on that and much more.
Back to all the swearing I mentioned earlier ? I hope this section will become very active. I intend to post regularly, but I also plan to offer more critique and discussion in this section than in any other section. (Not that I?m abandoning other sections.) And please PM me if my critique gets too much. I?ll ease off or keep out of your threads as appropriate.
So, here?s to ?Around the world in 80 days?!
[Raises glass of Guinness]Heartiest Regards to Everyone. Thanks Mark.
BertieBertieWoosterParticipantI’ve added a couple of reviews on travel photography books in the “Books” section – in case anyone is interested in some recommendations for books to help them take their travel photography a step further.

Post edited to add link.
=======================================BertieWoosterParticipantI?ve added a thread in the Events section ?European Heritage Open Days?. Fuller details are found there, but essentially it is a rare opportunity to shoot some beautiful old buildings in Ireland – great for capturing some of the image and history of Ireland. There?s even a photo competition associated with the Northern Ireland event. Please have a look.
These events run each year around the beginning of September, so please keep an eye open for them in future too.

Post edited to add link after Davenewt conveyed to me the shocking news that there may be a few lazy people in Ireland! :-)
Thanks Dave. It is a good suggestion.
=======================================davenewtParticipantFor future ref bertie, for us lazy people, you could add a link into the thread you just posted when you post here :-)
Sorry, I know, I’d kick me for being so lazy too… if I had the energy :D
BertieWoosterParticipantJust a thought?
What is a travel image? I?ll return to this thread from time to time with comments on that question. For now here?s a point to ponder?.
In the way that images of clothed people aren?t necessarily fashion photos and images of cars aren?t necessarily motorsport photos, so to images taken ?abroad? aren?t necessarily travel photos.
Conversely, some images of Ireland are travel photos.
davenewtParticipantThanks for adding the link above Bertie, just spotted it ;-) *grin*
For me, a travel photo is a photo of a place I’ve either been to or not, which either:
a) makes me want to go (back) there, or
b) gives me some understanding of what it’s like to be there – either in general, or in that moment with the photographer / subject.I say the latter because there’s some places I wouldn’t want to, or wouldn’t be able to go in reality, for example deep sea diving; any country where people frequently blow things up; or into the caves from one of the Planet Earth episodes (waaaaaay too much bat poo!)
But I’d like to know what it might be like to be there.
Maybe I’m blurring the clear distinction anyone might have of travel images (getting into the realms of documentary, photojournalism, etc), but for me they’re much more than shots that could be printed in a mass-market brochure or travel book. So much more.
To throw another piece of bread into the duckpond: one of the beauties of great travel images, I think, is that they can take you to a different time as well as a different place.
Images of anywhere you’d like to go, and which take you there, are travel images. Life is a journey… :-)
I don’t think I really answered your question, if that was a question that you thought might have an answer Bertie? :-)
BertieWoosterParticipantOne of the most highly respected photography organisations in the UK is the Royal Photographic Society. Many of the UK’s leading photographers and photography authors are members. After becoming a member, you can then join some of the special interest groups.
One of these special interest groups is the Travel Group – http://www.rpstravel.org/About%20Us/index.html. It has its own galleries, exhibitions, magazine, events, trips, etc. I mention it mainly because it conveys well what is meant by travel photography.
(I’m always wary of posting links to apparently similar or competing forums. But I think that the link above represents no concern. The fee involved will probably mean that very few join up. Having said that, I intend to become a member of the RPS and the Travel Group myself – probably joining while at Focus next year.)
BertieWoosterParticipantAnother site that every travel photography enthusiast should know about the the Travel Photographer of The Year site.
The competition has a very high profile – just look at that list of sponsors!
It is also a great site for conveying what travel photography and travel images really are.
BTW, let me know if you win… :-)
ulinkaMembervin13MemberI don’t know about the rest of you, but not all my travel experience has been 100% positive.
Some of the negative aspects are the most memorable though!Surely the photo should be of one’s own experience good or bad,
unless one is working for the local tourism department!Just wondering
cheers
Vin
