What type of photographer are you….??

Well… I’m not, I’m just a musician with a reasonably adequate camera that feels pretty good in
my hand. I’m too inexperienced to have found any particular niche that I can sit comfortably into,
and my interests are too varied, or muddled if you like, for me to focus on any one aspect of the
craft. So no, I’m not a photographer, but I’m having the most fun trying to become one.

    Well said Rob.
I would fall into this category if there is one. I take pictures of things I like I try out macro, landscape, portraits (snapshots if some people like) but mainly what pleases me. As a bit of compliment I like to try and see if I can get images of the quality I have seen here and on another forum I visit. Oh I don’t really have the time unfortunately to try it all.

Well I love to interact with people. Thats why I do weddings and portraits. Out of the two I prefer wedding photography. I love the pressure, the whole “one chance” thing. I like to come home upload my images from the day and sit and have a really good look at them. I love to see the brides face when she gets the preview album and thumbs through the pictures from the day. I personally think that a wedding photographer is more than just someone at the wedding to take photographs. Yes sure it’s great to be getting paid but I have made a lot of very good friends from photographing their weddings. People that were to me previously unknown.

Although I prefer wedding and portraits I also enjoy shooting other things. Like landscapes and seascapes. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on your own somewhere beautiful and setting the camera on a tripod and thinking about the shot.

Suppose to be totally honest I would photograph anything so long as I could use my camera, but wedding photography gives me the most pleasure…….

For me I think my strongest shots are landscapes, and I gravitate to these kind of shots also. I’m really keen to improve my studio skills, having taken a couple of shots I love to bits previously, but staying away in general due to unfamiliarity.

I’ll try anything once, and certainly don’t want to be pidgeon holed, but I’m certainly further down the landscape line than any other at present!

I began, on New Years Eve, a gallery called “Pic of the Day”.

The idea being that I have to add a pic every day for the rest of the year. It is proving a bit tricky after a twelve hour shift and darkness is everywhere so I have been fooling around with domestic objects on those nights. I learn a little more each time I do my daily pic and hope, after a year of this, to have come closer to finding my own voice, so to speak.

Up to now it has been mainly Landscape/outdoor work for me due to the proximity of some lovely scenery here in North Lincs.

Street shooting appeals to me but being a six foot tall shaven headed Dub, with a very strong Northside accent I have had a few funny looks when asking people for permission to shoot them in this small English town

A friend of mine did something similar to that for his thesis work in Uni. He had an small P&S 35mm camera with a date imprint facility. He made sure he took several pictures each day and kept a diary with it too. The culmination was 356 images (6×4’s) displayed on one wall, while on the opposite wall there were 365 extracts from his personal diary. At first it was confusing, running back and forth checking diary entries with images until you realise that the diary entry didn’t necessarily relate to the image. I found it quite fascinating. There was one day where he didn’t manage to capture an image and this was simply left as a blank space with the rest of the images. He got a studio placement in IMMA with it for a few months a couple of summers ago.
I think it’s a great idea. The best thing is seeing how different every day can be viewed even in a regular working routine etc. You’ll definitly learn alot from it I think. I cant wait until next year to see the finished piece! Maybe you could give us month by month installments?

Great idea! There’s even a section on PBase called PAD (Picture a Day) – http://www.pbase.com/pad. Might be interesting to look at for inspiration although I think the idea of PAD is inspiration in itself.

    I am an Artist.
    I am not a photographer.
I do not take photographs, I make Images.
The camera is just a tool to get the image I see.
The final image is up there in my minds eye :?

I find it extremely hard to classify myself!

I guess at the moment it is too early though as I dont really have a speciality. I dont really do much landscape, I do the odd bit if the oppurtunity presented itself, but I never go out witht he intention “Im gonna take a landscape shot today”.

I do quite alot of music photography, and if there was any particular type of photography I’d like to continue with as a career, that would probably be it.

I’d love to be better at portraits, and street. Candid portraits are my favourite type of pictures and street scenes are a close second.

Its a question ive never really asked myself until now so I guess I dont really know yet!

Me neither! Software Engineer with slight gadget fetish! I would point and shoot anything and everything as long as my subject doesn’t look back at me bothered/annoyed. However, “work/life balance” is just a mirage for the time being and camera sees light only on short holidays or on work trips… I would love to take photos like many here, but don’t know where can I buy a small pack of ‘talent’…?

Me? I don’t want to limit myself by classifying myself as one or the other. I just like taking snaps and the preference in the last few years has been for people snaps (aka portraits) as I got a little frustrated with the lack of success in landscapes. Heck, I’ve even enjoyed shooting the inside of cold storage rooms :!: (for a brochure)

My favourite type of photography would be Street Photography where I stand at a corner of a street and observe people and when I see a good shot just point and shoot. I also like markets where there are various interesting stalls and people, I usually walk through and point and shoot.

    All the best
