What’s a good 2nd lens? (nikon D60)

    Hi,
I got a nikon D60 just over a week ago with an 18-55mm lens, I was hoping the 18-55 lens would keep me happy for a little while but I feel too limited by it. I’m snapping anything and everything i see at the moment so what is a good all round lens? The 55-200mm lens seems like an obvious choice from what little I’ve read but I wanted to ask on here rather than just rush into it!

    Thanks, Mark

All depends on what type of photography your into Mark
You will get on grand with the kit lens for landscapes but a wide angle like the sigma 10-20 would be a decent start
A little 50mm prime is a great lens for any bag and can be got for around €100
If your into sports or wildlife a decent zoom upto around 300mm is what you want these can be
got cheap as chips or the sky is the limit,I dont use the longer zooms myself much but the odd time I do a bit of football or
birding I have a cheap sigma 70-300 which I have got some decent results and can be got for around the 100 mark also

Amen to all that Cathald says and maybe a x2 converter (don’t forgit the tripod) and you’re up &running. When the lottery kicks in you can buy all the 2.8 lenses and laugh at all the poor sod wannabees .. ……..

    Thanks for the replies :)

That 70-300 sigma lens is about €160 the cheapest place i can find, will this lens work the same way as the way my 18-55 nikon lens does? just with a longer reach.

I’m new to all this but am i right to assume a 2x converter will give me up to 600mm range with a 70-300mm lens? If so, does the quality of the shot deteriorate much, if at all?

    Thanks for the help, Mark

    Hi Mark,

I think the guys above neglected to mention the lenses recommended will not autofocus on your Nikon D60

For a set that will autofocus on your D60, a Nikon 55-200 (vr or non-vr) for reach, or a 35mm f1.8 for lowlight are good options,

    Damien
