Cheers TompixBandon.
How do you think this HD is in regards to what you talked about in your post, transfer speed, etc.http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/959744
TompixBandonMemberFor some reason, they don’t seem to give a transfer rate for it.
I note it is USB only – but this my be your best option if your PC doesn’t support the faster Firewire (also known as IEEE 1394 on PCs) interface.
Have a look through the review notes of previous users – linked from the page.
Regards.

its hard to support your own when the prices are so high.
How would you know if you did not ask! Give us a ring:01-8454021 or 087-2572688

You can get them very cheap on ebay too
I’m sure you can.
At this point in time I look at the great job that Mark has done in setting up this site, Steve on moderating it, and all the support the Irish Trade has given by way of sponsorship etc and I think why the hell. I am not particularly pointing out either you Iris or Mark33 but simply using you guys as an example of many of the photographers in Ireland and another reason why photographic business are closing every day.
I’m sure you all go to the trade shows in Ireland that are supported by the Irish Trade and touch, hold and sample the products on offer. Well I see a time in the near future when these type of things along with the sponsorship of your site and the purchase of many products will mainly be available outside of this Island. Come on guys and recognise that Irish Suppliers are open to doing business and realise that we may not have a web presence but in most cases we will try to compete. Make us your final call and I’ll see what I can do!IrisParticipantWell known Dublin camera shop price as of last Friday for a Canon EOS 50D & 17-85mm IS USM Lens.
List price: €1,650.00
Our price : €1,499.00You save: €151.00 (9%)
A friend of mine who was on a trip to America Bought me a canon 50D with a 28-135 IS USM lens for $1234 which worked out at €880 in total, and this was last week.
This is not as swipe at anybody in particular, but its time the proverbial Coffee was smelt and that the real prices are given to the Irish people as we have been “ripped off” for so many years and we sat back and took it.
Remember the time in this country when the only bottle of wine you could get was a bottle of Blue Nun, the Germans wouldn’t drink it because it was PURE TRIPE, so it was sold on the Irish market WHY, because the paddy’s would drink it. They wont know the difference, they wont complain “a sure isn’t it all right, it will do”. Not any more not any more -Competition is a great thing, and that’s just my opinion.
And sheldon, i will give you a call if you can do me a deal. I want to spend my money in this country, i live here..!!
stcstcMemberdid the friend pay import duty and vat ?
if not he or she would be breaking the law
IrisParticipant:roll:   NO is the answer to the first bit, he payed tax when he purchased the item. Reversing out of your driveway every morning onto a main road is against the law as well..!! And even if the duty was payed it is still far cheaper.
stcstcMemberwhat i ment was that purchasing in the states and then bringing it back to ireland without paying import duty and VAT is why things are so cheap as its not paying all the relevant taxes
IrisParticipantExactly…. we are being ripped off in this country, Tax, vat and import duty. If i was living in the United stated and i went to purchase this same camera for the same price, including the tax at point of sale, this would still be a cheep buy in comparison to buying it here in Ireland. The American companies who import these good have to pay import duty and tax as well i presume, but they can still manage to sell goods to the consumer at reasonable prices and still make a profit.
MarkKeymasterI purchased by last camera here in Cork a couple of years ago, it cost me just €20 more than online.
Of course I could pick it up there and then and didn’t have to wait :)Anyhow, few weeks later, a friend decided to put his CF card into the camera to view his photos and bent
a few of the pins!!!. I took it back to the camera shop, who parcelled it up, shipped it off and got
it sorted for me (part was replaced free of charge). They pulled out all the stops as the part and
damage wasn’t covered by the warranty.Even if the camera had cost me €100 more it would have been worth it as I doubt that any online
store would have given me the excellent service I needed at the time.Anyhow, sometimes the extra price is worth it, especially when the preverbal hits the fan :)
CooksterParticipantI hate computers and these guys treat me like a human being, can’t recomend them enough.
500G hard-drive for €84 incl Vat.

I agree with you mark, there is no counting for service and that personal touch, one 2 one thing. My friend is a regular traveler to the states and is a US citizen so he acutely went into the shop and purchased it for me and of course the camera is under warranty. The camera was advertised on their on line store for $1,499 excluding p&p, but when he went into the store he got it for $1,230 inc tax.
b318ispParticipantJust from a different tack, I’d suggest being very aggressive on choosing what photo’s to keep. After a few years it is very easy to have tens of thousands of shots which, realistically, are not going to be viewed.
I find that worthwhile momento shots can be stored at signifcantly reduced size and compression (e.g. less than 1500 pixels, quality 8 in PS), maybe 10% of shots are good enough to be stored as large format, high quality JPEGs and even less stored as orginal RAW files. The rest are dumped.
Often my folders of any particular outing maybe have as few as 4-6 shots that are worthwhile keeping – this compares to perhaps 20-30 from a few years ago.
This is speaking as a hobbyist of course…
adrianmatthewsParticipantHi All,
My Mac started to act up last week, as everything is on this, I decided it was time to back up!
I was in Malahide on Saturday, swung by Sheldons (for the 1st time), bought a 1TB drive, €110 euro.
He asked me if I had seen them in the window, I told him I had seen them mentioned on this site, he immediately knocked off a tenner……Happy Days!!!, backed up everything straight away and did a bit of maintenance on the Laptop.Just curious to see what the difference was online after reading the other “Buy Local” threads, I went on to the Lacie Site, It was €119 euro – no mention of delivery.
http://www.lacie.com/ie/products/product.htm?pid=11052
On Amazon it was reduced to £69 stg, went to check out and low and behold it jumped €114.95 incl postage and packaging
Exact same drive, so just goes to show, not everything is cheaper online.
I will definitely make Sheldon’s a regular haunt in the future,
Adrian
LaineyParticipantJust bought a terrabyte (1000 GB) of external hardrive from Reads (of Nassau St) for just €89 – thought it was a bargain!
NossieParticipantRight well this thread went from “How to back up” to “rant again about prices”.
So I’m going to get back to the OP and “backing up”.
Put all your photos on to a nice little external harddrive spinning at 7200rpm in a tidy little box on the desk. Now snag the cable, give it a tug, hear the bang on the laminate floor and now what? Anyone? Cry maybe? It won’t bring the pics back will it?I’m surprised to read that you all go for the external harddrive option. Shaking my head here.
Ok so barring Nuclear destruction and building bunkers etc we need to be a little bit more robust. Every harddrive WILL fail. For the most part I store and work on raid1 mirrored drives. This means I have 2 drives that are identical byte for byte. So if one drive fails the other drive has a complete perfect copy of the data. It means 1 drive for the price of 2 but when your external drive fails, and yes it will, you will be happy for it.
Added to that you said you back up to CD, well why not back up to DVD? It’s about 6 times bigger and if you keep it in a dry dark place it should last about 50+ years. And what’s better that 1 DVD for important stuff?.. 2 DVDs made by different manufacturers. So external harddrive no. DVDs yes. Raid1 yes.
hehe this here is classic… “My Mac started to act up last week, as everything is on this, I decided it was time to back up! ” thank your god it “acted up” and didn’t blow up.
External drives are good for replaceable data, mp3s, movies, software, all of this stuff can be got again.
Your work, docs, photos, recordings need much more attention.
