Hi Johnny – Assuming the sun plays ball – you can easily get a backlit sunset of the ‘Old’ Wicklow head Lighthouse. The sun sets near the north west sky at this time of year. The best place is at the radar station opposite. You can drive up the main gate – leaving a 5 minute walk to the vantage point. I haven’t been out there in a while – so not sure if the heather has turned red yet….which is nice for foreground.
You will not see the sun at the ‘working’ lighthouse – as its down on the east facing cliffs. If you go early – you can wander down and see the seabird colony. Lots of Kittiwakes, Razorbills and guillemots. Go over the wall where it says ‘dangerous cliffs’ – and down onto the steps. It’s pretty safe. The birds are below the last ‘S’ bend.
Here is an aerial view of the location – you will be at the ‘middle’ spot…and the old tower is at the top.
