White Balance Reference Card.It seems these little things are getting a great review.
who has this in PI? and what are your thoughts about it?
Thanks,
UnalGCPParticipantI have the full set but prefer to use the lastolite grey balancer. I have a friend photographer in Tullamore that swears by the whibal cards and would use nothing else.

Me too. The new version is great because it’s only one card.
I’ve been extolling the virtues of WhiBal on PI in the past. It’s very quick and easy to use and works for both RAW and JPEG shooters (although the preferred format is RAW). You don’t have to use it at the beginning of a shoot; you can use it in the middle or at the end too. All you’re doing is taking a reference shot from which to do a “click-whitebalance” reading from later in your chosen raw processor and applying the value you get to all the other images that were taken on the same shoot in the same light. If the light changes you quickly take another shot. I keep mine in my left back pocket from where I can quickly grab it and hold it at arms length to take a reference shot, all in a matter of 2-3 seconds. The card itself is hard wearing, easy to clean and can even be used underwater (for anyone doing underwater photography!) There are other cards which work just as well such as the Dynatech and the Digital Gray Card I have both the Dynatech and Dynatechs and although they give the same results I keep coming back to my WhiBal because it’s got a feature that I really like which is the shiny black section which I use to ensure there is no glare on the card before I shoot it (glare can lead to an incorrect value when you later do your click white balance).
richiehatchMemberOn a previous recommendation from Thorsten i too have one..! Love it…! I use it mostly for interior shots where there is a mix in lighting types…! Handy and relatively indestructible…!

GCPParticipantI must get into using it more. I think I was using the lastolite first and old habits die hard. I’ll just have to get it back out and give it an honest try out.

That’s interesting to hear, as mixed lighting scenarios are one of the few scenarios where it’s not purported to work so well, principally because the angle you hold it at can make a significant difference in such cases. For example take a scene where there’s a a table lamp beside a window and it’s daylight outside and your subject is equally lit by both. Angle the card too much in favour of one or the other and you’ve had it! This is probably the only scenario I can think of where an Expodisc might work better than a WhiBal. Of course, if there’s a predominance of one source over another, no problem.

Once you get used to the idea of it, it’s extremely fast to use. Can be used underwater too I believe (handy if you’re and underwater photographer!).
