Which camera to buy??

I have recently developed an interest in photography and want to buy a DSLR camera. I had decided after much thought to buy the Nikon D3000 as it was in my price range and seemed to be recommended as a good starter camera. I went to buy the camera on Saturday but the shop were completely out of stock due to non deliveries with the weather conditions. However the guy in the shop was into his cameras and was very helpful. He gave me alot of advice on buying the camera and the extra money I’ll end up spending on lenses down the road. He recomended that I would be better buying the Canon 500D as the lenses are much cheaper than Nikon and also the glass is better. I wouldn’t know much about this as obviously this will be my first DSLR camera. The Canon 500D is more expensive than the Nikon D3000 and now I’m completely confused on which camera to buy. Any advice would be much appreciated :D

    Welcome to the site !.

    Now onto your question:
The best thing would be to try and get a hold of each of them. You will find that you’ll prefer one over the other.
I’ve tried Canon cameras and didn’t like the ergonomics much and ended up going with Nikon.

I wouldn’t pay any attention to the statement that Canon lenses are better than Nikon, it’s incorrect. Both are pretty much equal and
both companies produce some great equipment. Anyhow, not a conversation we get into here as its fairly pointless.
Canon lenses however might be a bit cheaper on the whole. Either way, both are readily available new or on the second hand market.

I’ve compared specs on each camera so couldn’t really advise one over the other.

I’m sure some of the folks here will be able to help out there better :)

    Thanks

    Hi lkenny,

Welcome to PI and I hope you find the site interesting.

That a difficult question you have posed and I’m not sure
that there is a conclusive answer.

I have no reason to doubt the camera shop guy but I would
hope he had more reason to recommend the Canon than
the fact that the Nikon you went in to buy was out of stock.

There would no doubt be a few members here who would take
serious issue with a statement like “….be better buying the
Canon 500D as the lenses are much cheaper than Nikon and
    also the glass is better.”
I would be very wary of sweeping statements like that.
Canon and Nikon have a range of excellent cameras and lenses as
    do other manufacturers.

Like Mark said get your hands on the cameras you are interested
in and check how they feel.
Make sure they have the facilities that you want.

More than likely the manufacturer you choose will be the one
    you will continue to use.
Whichever one you choose I’m sure you will be love using it.

If you have any specific questions just ask.

    The best of luck.

Well..not that I know that much of (different) cameras but I have noticed most people here are talking about only Nikon and Canon.. I know everyone has their own favourite but should really mention that other companies have good cameras too. For example, Sony, Fujifilm or Olympus . Look and read and find the favourable for you! No one can tell which camera suits You the best, they can only recommend :)

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice! As I am new to this I’m not suggesting that Canon are better than Nikon, that’s just what the shop assistant told me! The shop was completely out of stock so I didn’t buy either camera in the end!! I will have a look at different cameras and decide then! Thanks again :D

Welcome to the site. I think that maybe due to the camera you were interested in not being available, the camera shop guy just wanted to make a quick sale of a more expensive camera. I use Canon because I like them & the quality is great, but I wouldn’t say that they are better than Nikon or any other make that I haven’t tried. I would look at the range of lenses available for each though, as the more choice you have, the more likely you will find something to suit your needs. The lenses are probably more important than the camera after all. Good luck with whatever you go for.

    Hi lkenny,

Something I meant to mention yesterday.

Some Canon DSLRs have full frame sensors and some have smaller APS-C sensors.
The less expensive consumer models have the smaller sensor while the more
expenensive models like the 5D Mk2 have full frame sensors.

Canon manufacture a range of lenses specifically designed for cameras fitted with the APS-C sized sensor.
These EF-S lenses will not work with the full frame cameras.

EF lenses will work with all Canon DSLR cameras.

EF-S lenses are excellent and generally not too expensive but it is something to bear in mind.

    Cheers.

    Hi guys,

I havent been on here in ages and I really regret that because I love photography. I have to get into it again! :D
I still have my normal Kodak Easyshare Z710 camera but I really would like to buy a new DSLR one.
Which one would be better…. Canon, Nikon or Olympus?

Most people here definitely divide into Cannon and Nikon, and you aren’t going to go wrong with either, I have a Nikon and I love it. But I also have an Olympus E400 (my first SLR) and I find that very good as well. It’s very versatile for me because it’s tiny and very light – it can just about go in a coat pocket, so it gets included in more trips than my more chunky Nikon. It has a lot of programmed modes for different effects, and the accessories are cheaper. It produces lovely photos. It may not be at the same quality as my Olympus technically, but I can’t tell the difference at the sizes I print, and on the days it goes into a rucksack instead of leaving without a heavy SLR it’s definitely good value. I do a lot of reading at http://www.trustedreviews.com as I find it thorough and unbiased.

    Hope this helps!

    Good luck! :D

Personally like Mark said way above is that you really do need to get these cameras in your hands a get a feel for them.. The most important thing about cameras and it’s something that’s nearly always overlooked is the Ergonomics of the camera, how well it feels and fits in your hand. Because if your not comfortable holding this camera, you won’t enjoy using it. Some people are Canon, others are Nikon, others are also Ricoh and Olympus and Sigma.. Do your research, because enivitably, the company who’s camera you buy now will more than likely be the company you will stay with..

As with regards the lens, I can’t give you any advice on what Nikon lens are like, I pressume they are good, the Canon ones are quite good and some are cheap.

Either way, I hope my advice helped. Best of luck.

    Have a read of:

    Hi,

I am new to DSLRs, though I used to be deep into photography , 25 years ago or so, using a Canon AE-1.

When I decided to get into digital photography I set my heart on a Canon, for old times sake, it was probably going to be an EOS 1000, as I didn’t want to get into too much debt, in case photography fell out with me again.

I went on the internet and read up and I wandered into a few shops and picked up some brochures.

I was doing just that in one shop when the ‘salesperson’ took me to one side, listened to my story, opened up two or three glass cases behind the counter, took out a Canon, a Nikon and an Olympus, all around the same €550 price tag, handed them to me, showed me the ins and outs of each one, let me get the feel for each one and spent 20-30 minutes doing what he loved doing best – selling cameras! He seemed to be deeply knowledgeable, very experienced and involved currently in photography.

I ended up not liking the feel of the Canon and bought a Nikon D3000, which fitted into my hand like it was made for me.

I would never have approached a salesman expecting him to give me the attention I got from that guy. In fact I was trying to decide on a camera by reading brochures, comparing specs and reading reviews. Never again, it was only by handling the cameras and experiencing the love that guy had for them that I came to my decision (he never said a bad word about any of the models or tried to steer me one way or the other).

The D3000 is not as ‘functionally rich’ perhaps as some of the dearer more semi-pro Nikons, but, horses for courses, it does everything that I want it to do, and more. It is giving me again an itch to take the killer photograph – not that I ever took one years ago with the AE-1 and film, and I doubt if I am going to take one now, but it won’t be the camera that will prevent me.

I wonder did the salesman know what effect he had on one customer that day or does he do it to everyone who crosses the threshold?

When and if I ever upgrade I think I will be attracted back to that shop……
