because I can’t decide which model to buy.
First off, I already own a Canon G2 and my curent camera is the Powershot A630 ( I bet you are all cringing  )
Anyways, I just want to take pics of my doggies (action shots) and landscape and anything else that takes my fancy.
I am torn between the Nikon D60/Canon 450D. I don’t need to have the LATEST model, I just want a camera that will give me better pics than a P&S .

    Any advice welcome :)

    Hello Camera shy,

    Welcome.

As most of the prople here will agree there is nothing really between
    either Nikon or Canon.
I have always used Canon and probably always will, Its just what I started out
    with.

If you are looking for something secondhand try out the ITEMS FOR SALE section
    on this site/forum.

    Best of luck!

Depends on what your budget is really. You could get the 450D and a lens for about €700 or buy the older model 400D and two lenses and a battery pack for the same price? What other aspects of photography do you want to try? Landscapes /Nature ?? Then you have an idea what lens would suit your over all needs (cover the type of photography with your dog shots)

This might sound silly, but forget about what camera, it’s all about what lens.

Once you spend your €600 or so on a camera, you’ll be looking in and around €500 for most of your other lens, so you want to make sure that as your hobby grows you can upgrade your camera without having to replace all the lens. The same is true of lens filters, but relatively speaking they’re cheap. This is the main reason it can be easy to find second hand gear.

If you can, before spending any money, know what type of photography you want to do then you can buy the camera body (i.e. without any lens) then purchase the exact lens you need. As most kit lens while adequate, will be made obsolete by additional lens you purchase later to cater for specific types of shots. But this means you’ll spend more up front.

I have a D60 and the kit lens is good, but for what I want a 18-200mm + a Macro lens would have been better saving about €150 which is about what I paid extra for a kit lens with VR, that said if you do get a kit make sure it comes with VR (this is image stability or stabilizing). Plus you must buy a tripod otherwise most of your pictures will look ever so slightly blurred not very notable, but you’ll notice a difference once you spend a bit of time looking at photos.

    Good point,

I only have experience of Canon and I suppose the mistake I made over the years was not buying
the best lenses i could stretch to.

I should have been aiming for the L series lenses as they are quite possibly depending on the
work you give them are “lenses for life” kind of! where I was buying aftermarket brands, Sigma,
Tamron which eventually got sold on at a loss!

SO if I was starting again I would buy to top lenses and upgrade the body.

When I started out I got an average zoom carry-around.

It was important for me to buy a cheapish lens first because I didn’t really know where I was going with photography.
Soon I found that fast aperture and smaller kit was more important than how much telephoto was available.

My point is that even though it is best to buy the best lens, it maybe hard to know which type of lens is best for you until you start shooting. Shelling out the big bucks you want to get it reasonablely right.

If you have a strong idea of the type of shots that you need, then try to get the top glass. For canon, which I use, 2 of the best lenses for their purposes are the macro 100mm and the wide angle 10-22mm which are by all accounts fantastic. These are not so expensive and not called “L” lenses, do research on the web for each lens, its important.

Not trying to muddy the water, but to be fair to other brands, at least two of my favourite shooters on this site use Olympus or Sony.

Also if you see great photos on the site in a genre that you would like to try, you could PM the person to get lens advice, for example “Jess the Springer” might have good advice for a doggy lens.

I went into Dixons and asked to look at Canon 400D /450D Nikon D60. I was disappointed at how small the 400/450 felt. I liked the feel of the Nikon ,it was a D80 they had. Anyway, I just asked to look at the Canon 40D to get a comparison and boy! the difference!!!!!!!
So, I ended up going into Gunns and buying the 40D with the EF-S 17-55 IS USM Kit :D Lovely shop and very nice people.

Can’t wait to try it out now -I’ll let you know how I get on :)
