paramedicParticipant
I have been using a Pentax A3000 Film SLR for twenty years and love it
But it’s time for Digital, looking at two types please give me your views I just can’t make up my mind1- Nikon D7000 with 18-105 vr lens approx 1400 euro
or
2 – Cannon 550D with 18 – 55 lens approx 850 euro
:?: :?
Thank everyboby in advance
tsergairlMemberhi Paramedic
i see a lot of answers here ;-)
ok,
as a canon user i have to say: Canon,but not 550D, U have got 20 years experience in photo, so i think semipro camera is the best for you with your price range (850 – 1400 euro)for the start with digi photos, so Your choice should be 50D IMHO :-)http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos50d/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
cheers
Chris
clami79ParticipantI couldn’t afford either of them but if I was.. i think i would opt for Canon 550D and use the remaining 500 euro towards a second lens..
Chris – why would you go for 50D? from the specs it looks like 550D is much better. I’m only a beginner so maybe I’m missing something?
from site:
[…apart from build quality (which is all but identical to the EOS 500D), the 550D has more in common with the prosumer EOS 7D, and – perhaps even more confusingly – it out-specifies the EOS 50D in many areas…]is the build of the camera so important?
tsergairlMemberbecause 550D can make movies ?? and 50D not ?? as You see Paramedic is a PHOTOGRAHER with 20 years experience, so probably he doesnt need movies,
550 D – 18Mpix , 50D – 15Mpix on the same size sensor , more pixels – higher noise, worse dynamic range
550 D – shutter speed from B to 1/4000 , 50D – form B to 1/8000 s
550 D – ISO adjustment every 1EV (100, 200, 400, etc ) , 50 D – ISO adjusment every 1/3 EV (100, 125, 175 etc)
50D – Interchangeable Focusing Screens, 550D – no
50D – microadjustment for lenses , 550D – no
50D – color balance with Kelvins , 550D – no
series photos
550D – 3.7 per sec, 50d – 6.3 per sec50D secondary LCD for settings
550D – plastic body, 50D – aluminium – magnesium body
did i forget about something ??
Cheers
Chrisclami79ParticipantThanks for clarifying that Chris, I was genuinely struggling in understanding the difference in the two cameras and didn’t mean to come across like if I was saying you were wrong.
to my beginner eye, the more pixel meant better result :) i think i should read more about that
Some of the things you ‘ve mentioned aren’t described on the specs list, that’s probably the reason why the 50D is more a professional camera while the 550D is considered a more amateur type. I knew there had to be a reason but i couldn’t see it ..thanks again
Claudio
tsergairlMemberno problem :-) , that why we have a forum, to learn something new :-)
personally i think , that 15 Mpix on 50D is to much as well :-) , i know that one of the best camera was a 40D, but it is very hard to buy a new one :-), (only LCD on 40D was shi..y :-) ) ,
i do not know how is with nikon, but in Canon – less digits on body than more prof camera :-) ,
Chris
paramedicParticipantThank you all for replys
good points raised
20 years of expericence yes … but still looking for that Gem Shot and still Learningthanks again
pelagicMemberIMHO, With todays DSLRs image quality isn’t the big difference. It’s how you use the camera and how the camera handles for YOU!
Think about ease of user control.
Chat about a few different cameras and then go shoot them. Find a store who does rentals or loaners and spend time with each camera.
Ask yourself what Pentax characteristics you like and don’t like. What lenses have you been using and which vendor (Canon/Nikon) is best suited to your photographic style?
MaxoneParticipantWell, the first of all, Nikon D7000 18-105VR and Canon 550D 18-55 are uncomparable two cameras because they belong to a different level – D7000 is semi-pro and Canon 550D is amateur camera.
The second, it is better to check both cameras, how it feels in your hands, which is more comfortible for you to handle, to set up, maybe chech even a Pentax.
As 20 years experienced photographer you should know that not a camera makes a good pictures but phototographers do.
Good luck
Dermot1Participanthave a look at the lenses, flashes and such like for both cameras and decide which system you want to buy into, I prefer nikon because I know that I can use the same crusty lenses on my dslr my dad was using on his nikon back in the 60’s and 70’s and in fact do, this opens up the option of picking up great pieces of glass for a quarter of the price their digi counterparts sell for. either way I’d say hang on to the pentax you may find yourself doing as I do and grabbing my film gear 90 per cent of the time as I head out the door.
