I find Amateur Photography isn’t great at all.

    Hi Flipflip/Everyone

The above comment interests me. I have bought only 3-4 issues of Amateur Photographer and was impressed by them. But maybe the issues I bought were not representative of the magazine in general. So you’d do me a favour if you talk me out of subscribing to a magazine that isn’t really all that good.

Maybe we’re looking for different things from magazines. The reasons I’d have subscribed to Amateur Photographer are:
    – it has a huge amount of up-to-date industry and product news
    – it has ads by almost everyone in the photography industry
    – the tests and reviews it does are done very comprehensively and very technically
    – 4 copies of Amateur Photographer in the month will have far more articles than any other monthly for only slightly more money (if you subscribe)
    – I’m not looking to it for practical, hands-on articles as I source those elsewhere.

    Comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

To be honest, Id say it was me who bought the ones not representative of the magazine. Ive only ever bought two copies of it.

Each to their own aswell, if you like the magazine then go for it.

Never bought a photography magazine in my life, unless you can count.. ahem…Playboy (I was young and foolish  ), but I’ve just started a subscription to Digital Photo. Haven’t received my first issue yet so I can’t give any valid judgement. Let’s just wait and see….

None – I check them out in Easons and buy if they have something particularly interesting in them.

    Same as….

I used to buy frequently but as they started to repeat i decided thet the money was better spent elsewhere

I got a few free copies of Digit at some show or other in the past, which I found interesting. It covers areas outside of photography but seemed to be a good mag for seeing the freshest stuff from the creative people in London…

i usually buy photography monthly, but i’m quite surprised no one has mentioned ‘digital camera’. It’s a great magazine for beginners -intermediate, the photos are stunning and you get a cd with lots of plug ins demos and other software with a very good tutorial in it. so basically those are the two i buy :D

Interesting replies. I’ve found that the UK magazines do start repeating themselves rather annoyingly, with the exception of Professional Photographer magazine. And to date, none of the American magazines I get are repeating themselves, there’s always something fresh and interesting in them.

Black and White is the only one i buy now. Like most magazines has good and bad months, portofolio and photographer profiles are great but the product tests can be boring. The profiled photographers are generally creative photographers rather than commercial photographers. Recent story on Keith Carter introduced me to an amazing photographer. If you like something different have a look at his photographs. http://www.keithcarterphotographs.com/

I have found that the more involved I am in Fora (or should that be forums) the less I rely on photography magazines for knowledge and inspiration. Nowadays a quick flick through at the local newsagents keeps me happy!

Practical Photography. I sampled a fair few magazines and as a newbie it seemed the best. I’ve been buying for just over a year now but am started to see there is an annual cycle in article subjects. On the other hand, I there’s been an improvement in the PS material and I spend most time looking at the photos.

National Geographic…. some of the best photogrpahers in the world work for them so it’s good for ideas. Most of the photos I’ve seen tend to be urban or portraits which aren’t my thing but there’s still plenty to learn from. And hey, it’s a great read too.

I don’t subscribe to any, but on all of my way too frequent trips through Dublin airport, I invariably pick one or two up for the flight. I used to really like Practical photography but find now that it’s just too repetitive and it’s rare now I pick up anything new from it (with the exception of one or two issues). The good thing about it is it’s availability. For a pure read, I love Professional Photographer, but unfortunately it’s not as readily available in the airports :( If I’m at home, I’d personally rather trawl through forums like this, or read online articles than buy magazines. Better still, rather than reading the mags, I’d rather be out with my camera for real!

On a related point, is anyone a member of the Bureau of Freelance Photographers and getting their newsletter and magazine f2 regularly? For someone simply wanting the buzz of getting 2-3 photos published in the year, is it any good?

    Thanks in advance.

Firstly, apologies for bumping my own comment. It’s a rather sad thing to do, apart from anything else. :-(

But I’d be keen to hear any views people have on the Bureau of Freelance Photographers organisation and its publications. Can anyone tell me a little more, please?

Personally i find all the UK mags repeat themselves ery now and then although i now read Professional Photographer as well as getting the mags from the organisations such as image maker,Creative images etc. Although i must be honest and say i do look through the high fashion mags and wedding mags as there is some really excellent contempory stuff in there where as the above mags are somewhat traditional with approaches to posing, lighting etc..

    Hi all mag purchasers

After much searching I find the best one of all is the American Popular Photography and Imaging. The articles deal with both film and digital techniques and the update on equipment is the best in the world. An added bonue sis that you can have twelve monthly editions deleivered to your door for 27 USA dollars.

I still can’t believe how cheap US magazine are in comparison to UK mags. And I do find the content a lot more interesting too, so it’s a double bonus.

I buy Practical Photography quite often. Find some useful tips, techniques, recipes there and try to apply them in practice. I did these photographs from that magazine recipes:

    http://www.i-taneva.com/imgs/images/fineart/13.jpeg

Absolutely adore a french PHOTO magazine.
I also buy Photography Monthly sometime and Black&White Photography as well if anything interesting.
Always look for new (to me) techniques, styles and tutorials (exercises).
But of course, seeing other people’s work ( doesn’t matter on what media) analising it is very helpful too.
