Which would you buy…50D or 17-55 lens?

MrsCitizens7Participant
Currently have 20D with kit lens. Have a 50mm 1.4 lens but find its too tight to fit a group of people in??
So which would you buy…upgrade to the 50D or buy the 17-55 2.8 lens. Both roughly 800pounds.
Other suggestions welcome.Many thanks.
PeteMcDMemberThe 5D is available around £850 used now. That’s what I’m looking at right now. Upgrading from a 30D, but keeping the 30D as a backup. 5D with the 50mm will provide a ‘normal’ field of vision- quite a bit wider than it is on your 20D.
mpbphotographic.co.uk come highly recommended.
thommacParticipantI use a 30d and have just updated my lens collection with 50mm and 85mm prime lenses.
I haven’t felt the need to upgrade to the 50d. Don’t get me wrong I’d love a new body but just can’t justify it.Are you happy with the image quality from the 20d with the 50mm lens?
If so I’d be inclined to go for the glass. The 17-55mm canon lens is supposed to be a lovely lens and glass is more important then pixel count. However the 50d is a substantial upgrade over the 20d. The question is do you have the glass to take advantage of the resolution increase.
gregorParticipantYou could also consider Tammy 17-50 2.8 which is sharp as razor and is very well priced. Zoom lens will also give you wider range, but I believe 50d is tempting
DuchovnyParticipantWell if the issue is fitting people in the picture you should get the lens not the camera…
The 20D is still a fine camera so I would say go for the glass.

I tend to agree with Duchovny.
I have had a 20D since it was released.
Apart from the LCD size I can’t think of any other reason to invest heavily in
a new body.
The 8MP seem to be fine and a well exposed file can be printed quite big.
I’ve recently added the EF-S10-22 to my EF-S17-85 and its good fun to use.If I changed at the moment I would probably seek out a new or used 40D rather than a 50D.
Anyway good luck with whatever you choose.
John.
MickSParticipantBear in mind that if you ever do go full frame the 17-55mm that you payed 800 quid for becomes redundant. The 17-40 f4L is another option and considerably cheaper than the 17-55.
