Whinchat?
-
shutterbugParticipant
This is not a very good shot just looking for i.d. really,
think it is a Whinchat?
joe_elwayParticipantThe facial markings look like the female Whinchat that’s in my book. I’d go with that ID.
shutterbugParticipantI must have been quite close to its nest, I think it has a bug of
some description in its beak, I got quite close to it only at that
stage it was clinging to a big weed that was blowing about in the
wind and I just couldnt focus on it at all. Thanks for the confirmation :)joe_elwayParticipantIf it’s close to you then it’s worth going back. Wear some dark green or brown clothing to blend in. Set up with a seat and a tripod, pre focus and pre-meter. If this was close to a nest then there’s a good chance she’ll use this post as a regular approach. You might then be able to get a cracker of a shot.
Just be sure that you don’t get too close to the nest.
John GriffinParticipantHi Guys, Sorry to burst the bubble, this is a female Reed Bunting. I’m actually watching a Winchat nest at the moment, hope to have pics soon. They are quite a scarce breeder in this country.
shutterbugParticipantI dont mind John, I have never seen a Reed bunting before either :)
They must be quite similar to look at though as the picture in my little
book is a ringer for a lady Whinchat………not that I doubt you mind :)joe_elwayParticipantMy ID book mentions the two distinct white stripes on the side of the face as being a sign of a Whinchat too. This is a female Reed Bunting I got a long time ago: http://www.highwaycsl.com/Photography/Wildlife/FemaleReedBunting1.jpg
Still, John is the pro at this stuff.
shutterbugParticipantSeeing the back feathers on your Reed Bunting Aidan it is
deffo a Reed Bunting! (not that we ever doubted John :) )
But as I said I dont mind as I have never seen one before
anyway and it is nice to see new things! I will go back as it
is only about three miles from where I live, there was also a
pair of swans with a new brood of cygnets that looked very
appealing.Noely FParticipant
