Hi John,
Sometimes I look at a photograph and I can instantly think of something to say about it.
Sometimes I look at a photograph and I have difficulty knowing what to say.
This can be particularly so when the author comments that “….I was happy enough with the result…”This is not a bad image but IMO it’s particulary good either.
But then what do I mean by good and is there a better, i.e. good, image to be had of this scene. The proportions are quite good with the foreground water taking up about a third of the image but the subject of the title is quite small, maybe even a little insignificant, in the frame.
A little less foreground water and a larger subject might be better.
The sky is not bad either although the whole image looks a little flat.I’m not sure what time of day it was taken but the light isn’t wonderful and the area immediately to the left of the chimney is quite dark.
Some low early morning or late evening sun raking across this scene would lift the image no end.But then this is all just my opinion and if you are happy enough with the image it must be close to what you were trying to achieve.
Be interested to hear other opinions.
Cheers,
John.
texMemberJohn a mantra of mine is ‘no light no life’ and that’s what’s missing from your picture. There is some light but not enough to lift the main subject from the background. Overall I would say your photo is a bit flat. This of course is not your fault as you had to accept the light that was presented to you. Your exposure is more or less correct, but very often people will visit a site several times in order to capture the perfect light.
Like John has mentioned above I think that there is perhaps too much water in the foreground which does not add a lot to your photo. I would be inclined to crop out half the depth of the water as shown.hotjohn01ParticipantSome morning light would have been peachy alright, reflecting off the water. yeah I agree with the points made guys, thanks a million :)
Had a quick go over it in photoshop and I definitely prefer this version, is it any better ?? (Doesn’t look too sharp  )
