Why do so many friends sell equipment

Hi all
I’ve been looking at other sites that sell equipment, .ie types, why have some many of these sites got equipment for sale for a friend, that means the old “I’m selling this for a friend and I don’t know much about what I’m selling”, anyone every been stung by this type of ad, the equipment is never cheap but I just don’t fell as though there is a friend if you know what I mean!!!!!!!
shutterbugParticipantHmmm….I suppose some friends would ask to sell gear if they were not attached
to a photography site, but I guess if you dont feel “right” about the add then dont buy!Buying unseen is always a risk anyway!
miki gParticipantIt’s a good way of getting rid of robbed stuff as you don’t have to know the technical details of the equipment you are selling. Personally, I wouldn’t be inclined to buy from someone who didn’t know what they were selling. Buyer Beware
Paul WhParticipantYou know I wounder how come friends when they go away for a while are so trusting when it comes to cash being handed over to their “friend” I tend to agree that some of that gear must be stolen, I’ve seen those adverts, I’m sure some are real but they can’t all be, buyer beware is true in this case.
Alan RossiterParticipantI guess we’ll have to close down Ebay so!!
A high percentage of cameras on Ebay are from a friend, an estate sale, a retired pro or a deceased father. I suppose stating it’s from a friend and not from the people themselves is in some way a get-out clause if something is fundamentally wrong with the equipment.
I’d be more wary of the sale of phones with no chargers, etc.

Alan RossiterParticipantI know where you’re coming from too…I was merely pointing out the plainly obvious fact that cameras for sale on Ebay, particularly film cameras of an age fall into this catagory quite regularly. Try not to take humour as a dismissal of your points.

aoluainParticipantI wouldnt buy from a seller selling for a friend . . .
but I havnt seen many of those adds either and I am always
scouting around looking at stuff.I have seen the ‘estate’ types though!
Personally I try to get as much info as poss. b4 I buy, I have never been
stung either . . . buyer beware is right.Paul WhParticipantI’ve just bought for the first time from adverts.ie, I would have to say that 99% looks safe but I didn’t respond to some of the ads, buyer beware is right, oh! and I think that what I bought was fine, I followed the posts for quite a while asked a few questions and I was happy with the response.
