Wide angle for cropped sensor 50D

Hi, I know Langan has a thread pretty similar started, but he is looking for a wide angle which he can use when he upgrades to a full frame. I on the other hand am happy to get one just for a cropped sensor. I have tried the 17-40L lens on my 50D but don’t find it wide enough. I have been looking at various reviews of both the Canon 10-22mm & the Sigma 10-20mm… They both seem to get good reviews, however the sigma is not as consistant! In some reviews the canon comes out best & vice versa..
Has anyone any experience of either of these lenses on a Canon 50D???
I am aware there is a price difference between them but wouldn’t mind the extra cost if it was worth it! I know neither of these will work on a full frame but I have no plans to upgrade in the near future so will be happy to get one of these and sell it if I do upgrade or keep it if I keep both bodies..
Any input would be greatly appreciated :)Many thanks,
Susie :DMr TParticipantHi Susie,
I use a canon 10-22 on a 40D and have to see the image quality is superb. I was going to buy the sigma, but read more good reviews on the canon. If you could borrow either to try it, you would have a better idea.

Hoping to borrow the canon 10-22 next week maybe.. I’m kind of swaying towards that one alright, although I have seen some pretty sweet images taken with the sigma.. Thanks for your info, very much appreciated :)
Green MeanieParticipantHey Susie,
I was in a similar position to yourself a little while ago, tried a 17-40 and not wide enough on the 7d.
Was looking at the Sigma and Canon wide options and bought a 10-22 off a guy on this site. It’s an excellent addition to the bag and great for landscapes and shots of the kids.
John.
BrickerParticipantHi,
I have a 50D and use a Tokina 12-24 that I bought of Sheldon (one of the sponsors) about a year ago…… great build and image quality.
I have never had a situation where I wished for any extra width.
I was dithering and he lent it to me for a weekend…… and of course, there was no way he was getting it back!

Cheers John.. I’m hoping to try the 10-22 over the next few days… And once I get something like this in to my head.. I just have to get it.. Its an investment I say :-)
Thanks for your input, much appreciated,
Susie

Hey,
I too borrowed one of these off a mate of mine and loved the width of it! He then sold it to buy a 17-40L which I also tried but don’t find wide enough.. i hate that when you borrow lenses and just don’t want to give them back… Its like a bug isn’t it, this photography lark. Love it though :-)
And thank you for getting back to me. Much appreciated
