    The opposite happen to me.
Caught the first half of the programme, then someone called to the house! Miised the end.

    From the RTE website:
This series will see Des Cahill caving in Cork and camping in Kenya in search of the spotted hyena,
Lucy Kennedy setting sail to capture a shot of one of the world’s rarest whales,
Brian Kennedy travelling the fjiords of Norway to snap the majestic White Tailed eagle,
Mary McEvoy leaving the stage to go on the trail of the elusive and aggressive Wild Boar,
and Pat Spillane rambling the remote woodlands of Romania in search of the Brown bear.

I watched it and wasn’t too impressed to be honest :?

I agree that the photography tuition from Mike Brown was more or less “here’s a D2x, use it on automatic” ??? And to be honest I wasn’t impressed with the challenge or lack of in shooting the bears .. firstly around the bin and then the using feeding trays, That aspect looked to be much more difficult last year with irish wildlife … the barn owl or the otters for instance :?: :?:

Yup. A bit disappointing I thought too.

Some great film in last night’s show but again, it was not enough.

BTW, here’s a story from Reuters about the release plan for the White Tailed Eagle in Killarney: http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=scienceNews&storyid=2007-01-04T132151Z_01_L04378230_RTRUKOC_0_US-IRELAND-EAGLES.xml

FYI, they are all using the camera in auto mode from what I’m aware off

I’d say it would be so panicky when you see your brown bear or whatever you wouldnt be fiddling with manual settings, not until you have a lot of experience.

Anyway why not come to Portlaoise and ask Mike Brown himself next wednesday?

Could have been a great show tonight but fell short. Even the audio from the night could have made the show special. I’ll never forget my sleepless 2 weeks and I was compeltely on a buzz the entire time.

I never found hyenas to be attractive so they weren’t something I looked for but have to admit they are tough to find. Best chances were early in the morning or dusk but the light is poor then. You don’t get much of that warm light typical of these times… I found sunrise/sunset to be very sudden events. Interesting to see that RTE did not cough up for the filming license so they had to stick to the tracks like us mere mortals. That makes getting a good shot and making the best of the light even harder.

EDIT: Oh there was a factual error about Cheetahs. They are solitary animals. Male brothers will usually stay together in a coallition to dominate a territory and sometimes singles will form an alliance. Females are compeltely solitary. They abandon their young after 18 months. The mother will tolerate daughters for a short time if they meet up. The film they had was of two males… you could see their “manes” and only male a coallition would succesfully take on a wildebeest.
