Wind Machine

Anyone looking for a wind machine knows just how expensive the real things can be (ca. ?700.00 I believe). Those rotating desktop fans don’t push out enough power to do the job adequately and powerful electric hair dryers work OK but need someone to hold them and need to have a cold air option.
So, what other alternatives are out there. Well, at Focus on Imaging this year I noticed Hoss using an air circulator. This is simply a great big fan which sits on the floor. It seemed to do the job quite well. I wondered where I might get one so when I got home I did a bit of research and found that these devices usually retail for around ?100.00 and are not all that easy to get.
Two weeks ago I noticed Maplin were selling one such device so I went in and had a look. I put it on full power, but it left a lot to be desired. So I figured if I really wanted something that moved the air, I would need to go for something more expensive than the ?50.00 or so that Maplin wanted for theirs.
But then, as luck would have it, I noticed that Lidl were going to sell one of these. So off I went today and in spite of a healthy dose of scepticism, I picked up one large box and handed over my ?40.00. I had to wait for the kids to go to bed first before hauling it out of the car. I’ve not had a chance to plug it in and try it out and I must say it’s quite impressive. It does the job very well. So if anyone is looking for a cheap wind machine, check out your local Lidl store for this – http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070705.p.18HighVelocityFan
I’m going to be hanging on to mine in spite of what the wife will say about me dragging more clutter into the house – I’ve always wanted a wind machine. Next on my list of effects devices? A smoke machine :D
GCPParticipantThorston,
if you need any info from Hoss, he’s one of the nicest, most helpful guys you can meet. I’ve done a few courses with him and we meet up at Focus each year (he’s usually working there anyway) and he is an allround good guy. If you email him he will reply or better still email Tracey, his wife, and she’ll make him reply. He will tell you where to get what he has and if I know him, he did not spend the earth on it.
