Windows Home Server

joe_elwayParticipant
I don’t think anyone has mentioned this on PI before so here it goes …
Just an FYI for the future:
MS is developing a home version of their server product. It’s intended for people who want a low cost solution for storing files, backing them up, sharing them, etc. Some people who I trust and who are testing the beta release really love this product. It is probably going to be a decent solution for serious amatuer shooters.

It’s intended to be a simple, wizard driven solution for non-techies who have a Windows PC(s). If Linux is your thang then that does not include you :)
This post is not intended to start any flame wars … I couldn’t be bothered with the uneccesary wear and tear on my keyboad. :)

Lemme guess… no one in your office has checked it out already? :D I bet I know one dude in there that has!
stcstcMemberDont wanna sound like another geek
but i dont see the denefits of it over say a NAS
I looked at the site and it seems to be setup to be a device, like from say HP. and the things its says its good and easy to do are the same as a NAS
the interesting one is the connection to livespaces
joe_elwayParticipantWithout having seen it myself, I don’t know exaclty how it differentiates from a NAS. The MS marketing fluff says that it’s much more user friendly. NAS is OK for a tech savvy person, WHS is intended for Grandpa or an amatuer shooter who want a central store for their MP3’s, photos, etc, and be able to simply back them up. Lots of friendly wizards I suspect.
stcstcMemberI have a Lacie 2Tb NAS
It couldnt be simpler to set up, open ya browser and set it up, really not hard, I reckon me mum could do it
MarkKeymasterstcstcMemberyea I need more, its nearly full!!!!!!
and i only have had it about 4 months
ThorstenMemberIs that 2TB total disk capacity or usable capacity (i.e., I presume you have some sort of RAID configuration in place). I have my primary backup on a single 250GB HDD with secondary backup to DVD and the 250GB still isn’t full after 2 years! I only store the keepers in RAW format on it, but I’m probably not shooting as much as I should be either (my finished files are only archived to CD/DVD).
stcstcMembersorry I should of explained in more detail
Yes thorsten there is raid 5
so useable is 1.5Tb
But I actually work from home, i work in the audiovisual business, ie video editing DVD authoring etc, so projects fill the drives much quicker than images.
also most of my photoshop documents for presentations tend to be huge, 30 or 40 layers is a normal graphics file for a presentation i would be making for someone
ThorstenMemberAh, I see – that paints a clearer picture :) I would imagine that A/V files take up a significant amount of space alright (and of course you need to be able to transfer the data rather quickly too).
stcstcMemberyea, speed is king
although I do not use the NAS as online storage for video, its not quick enough
I have a local raid on the video computer

For a measly 50 or 60K you could’ve splashed out on a low end SAN with attached fibre switches and stuck in dual HBA’s into your machines. No speed issues after that! :)
stcstcMemberactually you can do it for much less
15K for an apple Xraid
3K Fibre Switch
1K per machine for HBA
