I would be interested in hearing the technique employed for this one Ali? Was it shot RAW and then converted for sky separately, or did you use filters? It looks great on the screen – have you printed it yet? There could be some potential for poor detail or noise in the ldarker bits of the left foreground, but hopefully not?

As far as comenting on the composition is concerned, I think it is faultless. There is great ‘balance’ between the ploughed part on the left, and the tree on the right. The cloud formation could hardly have been better, and the lead-in lines work really well.

Pity it was too late for RAW……..but should make volume II….

Hey Ross, Thanks for the comments. This was taken RAW, no filter. With images like this i usually tackle the sky, the foreground and the overall image separately so plenty of layers, selective colour, contrast and sharpening. I haven’t printed it yet, i’ll wait til i have a few more shots before i send off for some.

i have been trying to come up with something erudite and intelligent to say about this shot … and to my eternal shame i have failed :-( … so in the end all i can say is i adore it .. the fact that this shot manages to convey such mood and emotion speaks volumes for you both as a photographer and a person.

    tip of the hat :-)

wow….. how do you do it…. You must see the fluffy clouds and run with your camera…..

    Where was it taken…?

I like this one – its one of the better landscapes I have seen in a while. If I had to think of anything critical to say it would be that the area of ground on the left immediately before the horizon seems a bit too dark for my preference – still a great shot and a lovely conversion overall.

Thanks a mil all for the comments :)

Antifuse – Thanks a million antifuse. Hopefully i can stay consistent.
Rodcunha- Thanks Rod, i took a few shots of this scene, a few landscape and portrait. Composition wise this was my pick out of the bunch.
David – Thanks so much, the shot does speak volumes. Delighted that you like it, and it’s great that i can return the favour
after drooling over your work for over a year now :).
MTBIreland – Yep that’s literally what happens  Into the car and off with me. This was taken around Castletown. I could see the field in the distance behind the main road – typical dilemma, “how do i get to it”. Took the first road left and there it was.
Gerard – Thanks so much. Taken RAW so i might play around with the LHS, see where it takes me.

It’s a really nice image, love the dramatic sky and the fine detail on that small tree, I was wondering what it would look like printed, Will you be able to retain that tone and contrast on the printed image. I see you send them out to be printed, are you generally happy with the results. What size do you print them.

    Hi Ali,

This is a lovely dramatic shot with lots of texture in it I think it was worth the “feckin freezin” weather just for this shot. Well done.

Thanks a mil Eddie and Terry.

Eddie, i’ve recently printed up to A2 and i have to say i am relatively happy with the results. That said, it’s easy for me to say that when i have nothing to compare to really. If you have any advice, it would be very much appreciated. There’s one thing taking the shot, printing is an art in itself and something i haven’t dabbled in at all.
