Winter Wonderland

Alan RossiterParticipant
Slaney river, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.
Cold…damn, damn cold. NFL & Lousyphoto and I went to this little spot that I’m sure we’ll be back to. This one had to be pushed a little in the right direction but I’m happy with the result. However, I’d appreciate a few keen eyes to pick holes in it.
Alan.
BrickeeParticipantRobMemberVery nice Alan. Wintery scene, looks damn cold, and not
a good day for a swim…Good lead in with that Robinson Crusoe type fence, and plenty of detail front to back;
perhaps the metadata would be nice to have a look over…As for holes, well, there is a little banding in your sky, though that may be down
to jpeg compression. And for some reason or other I feel a need to lean to my
right when I’m looking at it – perhaps a half degree ccw rotation might help…Lovely picture. Should print very well if you can get rid of the banding…
Rob.
Brian_CParticipantAlan,
this is a fantastic shot, it really is. I’d go as far as to say, it’s probably one of your best. Great rule of 3rds, lovely lead in lines and basically great compo.
I even called the wife in to have a scope at it, if that don’t impress ya…….One little point of concern is, there’s a little bit of banding around the sun, it might just be the compression or my screen, but defo worth fixing.
Beautiful!!
Was it taken with the Sony A700 by any chance……. :D :D
nfl-fanParticipantF-F-F-F-F-F… Freezing… that’s my emotional response for this one… I’ll never forget the cold… so this pic will forever remind me of it.
I’ll not repeat what has already been said, other than to say this is a beauty of an image.
Do I wish I took it… you’re damn right.
Can you take anything out of this comment? I’ll be forc’d if I know
Alan RossiterParticipantThanks for the comments all.
Rob – yup, a rotation indeed. It’s a trial version that I want to put into an exhibition so I wanted critical C&C so this is taken on board…how I missed it I’ll never know.
Brian C – the sun, as Rob pointed out to as well, is a little overworked to bring out the detail. It will be worked on again but the compression does exaggerate it somewhat. And yes – the A700…convinced now or are you still heading for the “Dark Side”?

steelydanParticipantsean1098MemberBrill Alan, have been looking for a bit now.Is there something going on at the top of trees?, or is it me.
Sean.
mgstParticipantFantastic shot great leadin with the fence and good luck with the exhibition.
Mick
Alan RossiterParticipantCheers folks.
Sean – there is some banding from the touching up but I’ll be cleaning this up. Speaking of skys there was a highly unusual sky in Wexford this morning for about 5 minutes. The whole place turned bright orange and I’m not just talking about the area where you’d expect the sun to rise. Lousy said that even the local radio had made comment on it. Of course, my memory card was in the reader still and timing was just off to capture it but just imagine a saturated orange sky, then push it in PS and that’s what happened. Unreal!
Alan
MartinParticipantVery nice Alan, one of your better pics in the last while i think. Nice mood and nicely captured. Would be happy with this one.
If you want to put this into an exhibition I would spend some time post processing it to get it perfect. I would get into a cycle of printing and post processing till you get what you want. The colours in this might be hard to get to come out in print (on my printer they would anyhow) so you will have to print and post process a few times i think

Mick451ParticipantThere’s a lot to like about this shot, Alan, but it doesn’t do it for me 100%.
Love the light, the colours and the general mood.
When you first look at it it does have a lot of potential for the wow factor, but for some reason doesn’t quite achieve it.Been looking at it a while now and the thing that bugs me is actually the fence, I just don’t think it’s really needed.
It’s a beautiful rural scene which you did really well to capture, but the fence isn’t a natural part of the landscape and jars with it – a man-made intrusion. That’s what spoils the mood for me. Compositionally I don’t think you need it either, the river itself leads you into the shot and without the fence it would have a better feeling of unspoilt stillness IMHO. With a shot like this I’m not sure you need such an obvious foreground, the texture of the foreground as it is or, by moving a bit, the rippled water would have been enough. Of course, if the fence wasn’t there the composition would have to be altered slightly as there would be too much space on the right. But that’d be easy enough to adjust by simply moving position.Alan RossiterParticipantInteresting thoughts Mick. Certainly one to look at. I have some from the other side of the fence looking in the same direction so I’ll give it a go.
My initial thoughts were to get the lead line to the main feature in the image then use the river to further lead to the lighter area of the image. But, all eyes and critique will lead possibly to a better image.Appreciate the comment Mick.

Oh no I’m staying put…. I’ll get a A700 soon.
Given the detail in the grass in the foreground I presume you had the D-PRO (I think that’s what it’s called) turned up to 5.

DR doesn’t work with Raw. If you use the Sigma 10-20mm you’ll find the details starting to pop. But having said that the details were helped by the frost contrasting with everything else.
