Wireless Flash set up

    Hello all,

I need help with the following problem, I have a canon 40d and I am setting up a wireless flash set up to photograph badgers near where i live. I have a canon 580ex11 and a 430ex11 set up as slave units using a canon st-e2 speedlite transmitter. When i have it all set up both the flashes emmit a red pulsing light. Firstly is there a way of switching this off as I can’t seem to find anything about it in any of the manuals and secondly in the event it can’t be switched off will this red light spook the badgers.

    Thanks in advance

Use insulating tape to cover the red light. Spook badgers no more!

Sorry, just realised these were IR triggered…insulating tape probably won’t work then.

The red light flashes when the flash is in ‘slave’ mode. It will go out if the flash goes into ‘sleep’ mode, or just after it fires, until it’s ready to fire again.

There’s no way to turn it off. However, the sensor is at the top, so you should still be able to mask off the bottom part where the light is emitted without affecting the triggering. Some experimentation may be necessary :)

    Hi Justin,
Badgers see in black and white and i used to observe them regularly at a sett near my home by putting red cellophane over a torch. They never seemed to notice or mind the red light so I cant see it being a problem. I would be very interested to know how you get on. I intend to try this myself but need another flash.

Thanks for all the replies. Padraig, I will let you know how I get on. I will have to wait for the weather to improve slightly, maybe next week.

Best of luck with the project Justin. Hope it goes well and you get some nice images to share with us.
