Had a really great day at the zoo today, took a look at the
new wolves which have been introduced into the pack, I dont
think this is one of the new ones, would appreciate your comments
on this one, I like the way it turned out but is the background a bit
overpowering?
That’s a lovely shot Shutterbug….really nice and sharp….would have been perfect if he’d turned and looked at You…but that would have been asking too much.
Must take another trip to the zoo myself soon.
Thanks Robbie, I had a really nice day, wasnt too busy and
most of the inmates co-operated, a great pack of hyenas (not spelt right?)
in great spirits. The new Asian elephants have arrived but are not out yet
until their enclosure is finished, scheduled for 1st May this year! It is a great
little zoo. :)Very nice shot. I do believe that’s one of the older wolves but could be wrong.
Hyenas? Sure you don’t mean the African Hunting Dogs? Can’t wait to see the Elephant enclosure. It looks huge.
Thanks Joe! Think you are right, the new arrivals are much
more sandy in colour and they seemed to stay together on the
other side of the enclosure, and you are also right about the
Hyenas?? I had never seen them before are they fairly new to
the zoo also? They have beautiful markings and huge ears dont
know if I got a decent shot of them yet.African Wild Dogs. Definitely. They’re a very different animal to a Hyena.

The Hyena is an ugly creature. Eats it’s prey while alive. Filthy too. Will sleep in their own mess. I can’t find anything I like about them. They’re built almost entirely around their jaw which is built to crush bones. They’re one of the few (if not only) creatures that can intimidate Lions, but only if in sufficient numbers. There’s stories about these coming into cmaping sites out in the bush and attacking tourists … probably just a myth but you never know ;-) As much as I don’t like them, they play a crucial role in cleaning up the plains.

This is what is in the zoo. I’ve never seen them animated. They’re usually asleep when I’m there. Very rare now. They hunt in packs like a wolf. From what I’ve seen, they have a similar social structure to a wolf pack but I could be wrong. Very clever hunting style where they take turns hunting down their prey during a chase. Eventually the prey will fall down in exhaustion.
The new wolves in the zoo are from Longleat (featured on Animal Park on the Beeb). Their wolves are a very unusal colour. Would love to visit there some day. Not just for the animal park though…. it looks like an amazing location.

They’ve got real character :wink: I love the “Red river hogs” down beside the lion enclosure,fantastic faces.

Unfortunately, Noely they were at the back of the enclosure and couldnt
see them properly, went back a couple of times but they were happy
laying in the sun and didnt look like they wanted to move :)
Good to have friends eh? I think you should be working on a
Photography Ireland behind the scenes day :) :)Speaking of which, has anyone been on the official zoo photogrpahy “courses” they have a couple of times a year? They’re advertised months in advance in the membership magazine, one for kids and one for adults. Do you get alternative access like you see with similar sessions advertised in England or is it just the usual access?
