Would also be worth pointing out that some of these images depict real life tragedy face-on. Some images are quite graphic.

A good addendum, Alan. I like the Press Photo series, but also find them quite graphic in places. Then, the cynic in me suspects the only stories that are considered newsworthy are graphic tragedies, or feel-good stories.
A nice series though, but would also like to see more reportage-style photo essays, in addition to the standalone single images.
