Wot… very little Canon talk here?

How about some rumors!!!!!!!
24th August is going to be an interesting day…
Possibly a 370D to be announced and just maybe a new combined 1 series (22mp etc.). If the combined 1 series is not announced then it will be September 2006 or February 2007 for sure!ThorstenMemberWe should know something before the end of the week. Canon have a history of making major anouncements in advance of major shows and Photokina is just over a month away. It looks like they will probably come up with something like
1) a merged 1D, 18.5 mp 5 fps and 10 mp 8.5 fps. Digic 3 processor and looking like current 1D
2) a 5D update or camera looking like a 5D, 6 fps, improved autofocus, Digic 3, same sensor as 5D.
and probably one or two new or improved lenses.
Personally, I think the MP race has slowed down a lot and the emphasis now is on improved image quality (lower noise, etc) rather than more MP. A combined 1D as described above would be a really clever use of the technology, reducing the pixel count to increase the fps rate when needed.
Does it matter to me what they announce. In the short term, no as I don’t plan on making any further investments in camera bodies for a while. But in the long term it does matter as it’s interesting to see where Canon go from here and what their roadmap into the future is likely to be like in order to remain No. 1 (well, at least I find it interesting from a business and marketing perspective, regardless of the photographic aspects of it).
carlParticipantIm not sure if digic III is ready just yet and if we will see a revised 5D (I could be well wrong). Im of the opinion that the 370D is the most likely announcement for Thursday and just maybe the 1 series. You are right about the megapixel race (Chuck Westfall of Canon stated that the megapixel race is over after the release of the 30D but that also could be a convenient way of saying “we didnt expect anyone to trump us in the megapixel department but wont admit it”) although I think Canon believe they have to follow Nikon/Sony at the lower end of the market (10.1mp). Canon have also stated that their priority for 2007 is increased dynamic range. Now that is very welcome. Anyway we will all see on Thursday.
By the way there is talk of an EF 50mm f1.2 L for Thursday too…. :o
FintanParticipantI usually laugh at all the Photokina speculation but am bitten this year. I’m going to upgrade my SLR in the next few months so watching the “news” closely. I’d love to see a 1ds mk3 announced, to drive down the price of the mk2.
EnygmaParticipantApparently this was on the Canon website yesterday. Looks real to me

400D, 70-200/4L IS and 50/1.2L
The 70-200 with IS would be nice, and lets hope they’re going to put the sensor cleaning into all of their new models.
davenewtParticipantHeard similar rumours about an update to the 350D a few days ago (when I actually went looking for info on upcoming models). I’m happy holding off for a week or two on my decision to buy a DSLR anyway ;-)
