Yet another lighthouse
-
AedanCParticipant
Since there seems to be a bit of a lighthouse theme going at the moment so I could not resist putting up this one from earlier this week. It’s the lighthouse on Sherkin taken at sunset from the Baltimore side. This only lines up like this for a few days in autumn and another few in the spring.
All comments and criticisims appreciated, thanks in advance,
Aedan
SeaviewParticipantThat’s a stunning shot Aedan, you certainly made the most out of you opportunity. If I was to print this image I would first remove the pole and the lines.
Dave.
snaphappyMemberGreat shot Aedan lovely atmosphere to it. I might be tempted to crop out some of the negative area at the bottom it is a tad overpowering perhaps a 16:9 crop loosing some of the bottom black
djbutsyParticipantExcellent shot & also would crop the dead area. The pole & wire gives it that origional affect which i like but if you ever tried to seel it would most lkely need to go. Its quite easy to remove within photoshop :)
Keep up the good shooting.
DanBParticipantBeautiful image!
I look at the posted cropped version and I cover the pole to get close to 4:3. They both have their own flavour. It’s up to you what you will do, but since you posted the 16:9 it’s clear you made your choice.
5faytheParticipantHi Aedan.
I love this photograph and I would be very pleased if it were mine.
I love the colour and the fact that you have managed to meter so
that the sun is not overexposed. The silhoutte is nicely defined and the splash of light on the lighthouse is lovely.
I understand the comments re the dark area at the bottom but I think the
dimensions of the image are, in my opinion, just right.
I have tried various different crops but they create a different photograph
and none of them looked as good to my eye.
I think the proportions of black to red look good to me.The wires and poles debate is one I often have with myself and many times
they can ruin a potentially good photograph.
Here I like them.Very well done with this.
John.
hotjohn01ParticipantYeah, i agree with everything 5fayth has said. If this was mine, I’d be ecstatic !! :)
wesleylawMemberThis is nice Aedan. A portrait crop 4×5 with just the lighthouse and sun might even be an option.
AedanCParticipantThanks to you all for your detailed comments.
Dave/Seaview: I gave a lot of thought before posting it to removing the pole and the wire but to me it’s an integral part of the composition so I decided to leave it in. It was a close run thing though.
John/Snaphappy: Depending on what I do with it I’ll definitely crop from the bottom all right. I have already taken quite a bit off it already prior to posting.
djbutsy: Interesting point and I think you are probably right. I had not thought about having a “sanitised” version for selling, good point.
John/5faythe and hotjohn01: Thanks for the very long reply. I agree about the wires and poles, I have removed them in the past but this time they just seemed right to me. Regarding the exposure, it’s actually two exposures blended, one for the sun and one for everything else. They were taken about 2-3 seconds apart so the sun had not moved too much in between.
Wesley/wesleylaw: Thanks for the comment, I had not thought of a portrait crop but you are quite right, there is a nice one there all right. Good spot.
Interestingly none of you commented on the lens flare on the left part of the roof, had any of you spotted it? When I get time I’ll work on reducing it.
Thanks again to all of you for your critiques.

hotjohn01Participantorla_fParticipantThis is gorgeous Aedan. I was up at the Beacon on Saturday evening and didn’t even think of anything like this – I was too intent on a Beacon shot! I’ll post one soon.
