I don’t know picasa,
so I don’t know what it can do-
The main difficulty I have with this one that is you’re not close enough-
after that, you maybe didn’t get the attention of the young sailor-
he looks distracted by something off to the side-
This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the child was distracted, or engrossed,
but the child is obviously engaging with something,
but its out of shot, and it isn’t you-
and by extension, the viewer.
Perhaps carrying a little birdie,
and producing it just as you’re ready to take the picture might do the trick-
The conversion is nice-
perhaps a bit contrasty-
we’re losing detail in the shadows on the child’s face-
Getting closer would remove the post (rowlock? sternpost?) to the left,
which is a big distraction-
Horizontal horizons are easy these days,
and are one less distraction-
I’m sure picasa allows you to rotate-
One more thing-
this picture seems to have an Adobe RGB profile-
Its maybe not so important for mono,
but pictures on the internet should be posted with an sRGB profile-
Here’s a quick edit-
but closer might still have been better-
Hi J
thank you for the detailed reply on how I can get things better, its this good constructive feed back that will hopefully lead me to capturing a few good shots sometime
