Good Thread, with some really nice stuff!

Guess this is mine. Hornbill from Botswana.

Agree, really good thread, with lots of nice stuff-

    After careful deliberation,
I’ve decided that for me to post anything here would be akin to donning a Gimp mask,
strapping a pool ball in my mouth,
and crawling around on all fours,
while pretending to be a deep buttoned black vinyl ottoman.

    So I wont.

My two cents worth. I was in Australia in september and was lucky to catch these few just at the right time

Would it be very grumpy of me to suggest that photos from a circus or a zoo should not be in the wildlife section?

While I’m grumping, can I also suggest that safari shots might fit better in the travel section?

I’ve got friends who have a “dinner party” every time they return from their hols and we have to sit through a slideshow of their snaps. It’s boasting, pure and simple.

(Before someone says it: they are good friends with one or two small faults – I won’t be kicking them into touch for this.)

I do somewhat agree that zoo/circus images are a bit iffy in this thread but I dont think they are in this section…. Then again if someones favorite shot is one taken in a zoo/circus then so be it…!

As for the Safari ones…. no way… they definitely do belong in here..! They do make me extremely jealous all the same…! :-)

Safari stuff belongs. It’s wildlife. As for boasting … I made big sacrifices to go on my trip earlier this year and am hoping to do so again next year even though it isn’t looking good. I’m certainly not rich nor boasting in any way.

I purposely didn’t put any zoo stuff in this thread. But I do think zoo shooting is valid because it’s a useful way to learn how to shoot uncontrolled animals and get critique. It’s also great practice. It cannot make up for any fieldcraft required.

I have to agree with joe elway here. I work extremely hard all year so I can go on safari to be in a wonderful natural environment. It is where I am happiest taking photographs.

The shots I see in this thread are of a magnificent quality. Despite being surrounded by such abundant wildlife, it is extremely difficult to get quality shots on safari. Each trip I take well in excess of 1000 shots to find maybe 3 or 4 that I am happy with.

I don’t invite friends around to look at my holiday pictures, in fact very few of my friends would know how much I am into photography.

This thread invited people to post their wildlife shots and I posted my safari shots here to have them criticized so I can learn, rather than praised so I can wallow. Im not interested in praise for my photography.

I think your comment is unfair PeteTheBloke

You’re right. Of course you are. Sorry.

I don’t want to go on a safari, but you probably wouldn’t think much of my perfect holiday either.

I stand by the circus comments, though. And I’ve yet to be persuaded about the zoo.

Tried looking through some photos to see if I had anything to offer…

What a bloody huge finger !

I dont have any wildlife ones for this thread but I think it would be unfair to discriminate against people who shot theirs in a zoo as opposed to shooting them on a multi-thousand euro holiday in africa. Its the photograph that counts not the backstory. I would say shooting through cages/reflective glass while milling around a few thousand zoo goers leering at animals that are bored or camera shy to begin with presents its own challenges.

Perhaps not up to the standard of what’s here already, but this is probably my best from 2006…
