Your Favourite Wildlife shot of 2006

I think, JohnnyMcMillan’s shot is my favourite. Simple and unusual. I’ve purchased my equipment this month, so here’s my “best” shot (taken today, actually). I could get used to the sunny days – hoping the best!

I stand by the circus comments, though. And I’ve yet to be persuaded about the zoo.

This seems to be a pretty common debate in nature/wildlife forums. You can throw in pictures of pets into the whole argument.

    Here’s my take.

    1) For me, photography is a hobby. It’s something I like to do and try to imrove at. Whether it’s lack of time or lack of contacts, I’ve no one I can meet up with on a regular basis to learn from or get C&C from. This is why I post on sites like this (increasingly just this one, actually). A great way to learn camera technique for wildlife is going to the zoo. There’s no where else where you can take countless shots of animals on a guaranteed basis. As John mentioned, you can go on safari and not see something you’re after for days. Leopards are rare sightings. I’m thinking about a Tiger safari in India if I can ever put the money together but I know that the chances of seeing a tiger are small. There’s all sorts of Simpsons style disclaimers on the travel agents sites. If I’m doing something like this, you better believe I’m going to practice before I go out.

    2) I know I’m lucky to have gone on safari in the first place. Not everyone has the time or money to do it. Big cats are wonderful subjects and the zoo is going to be the only place for some people to see and shoot them.

    3) A large percentage of supposefly wild animal shots used by pros and agencies are shot in zoos or parks.

    4) I’m not a purist. I’m in this as a hobby.

Please don’t take this as a rant or a shouting match. I know this could appear as one. An old boss of mine reckoned email (and web posts) can way too easily be mis-interpreted…. we write them one way but everyone else can read them another.

I started a thread in the suggestions box about this.

I apologise again for my intemperate phrase earlier in this thread. I must have been tired that day ;)

Mark won’t be splitting the section, but I still think there are grounds for doing so. However, he’s the boss ’round here.

Lots of great shots here, cant pick any favourite myself.
(Although I’ve always had a thing for Hornbills eyelashes, ever since the one in the zoo hypnotised me by fluttering them…..
and stole me bag of crisps)

I remember John’s deer and fox shots from earlier this year. Stand out shots.

One of my new year resolutions is to get more involved in this forum so below is one of my favourites taken in Dublin Zoo, raining as usual
