Your own website!!! The costs…the running cost etc
-
MadthingParticipant
This is for the people who have their own website. Can you tell me how much it cost? I would love t have my own site but is it very expensive to keep it runnning and updated? What was the main reason you setup a website in the first place?
Thanks guys, let me know :)
nolongerParticipantI have my own website for my blog… Originally I set it up as an outlet for writing, now I primarily just post up fun links and stuff, and the occasional “here’s what’s going on in my life” post for my friends and family back in Canada since I moved to Dublin. http://www.ryanwaddell.com – the running costs (for my needs, there are cheaper options available) are approximately $10US/month for hosting, and $9US/year for the domain name. I believe GoDaddy.com offers free hosting when you register a domain with them (just verified… I do, indeed, have 4 unused hosting credits) – 5gb of disk space and 250gb of traffic, which is actually really damn good. I’m sure there’s some reason why I don’t use them, but it certainly is cheap.
LoGillParticipantI don’t have my own website very long – i was hitching on another site for about 6 months. I host with Hosting365.ie – starting at around 4 euro per month to host and I think aroung 210 for the domain
.
My motivation is pretty basically to display my photos, hopefully in time to show my improvement in photography (assuming i improve  )…
I am NOT very techie so my site is VERY simple :) i did get help in starting off the template, and I can update it myself… its a great way to share your stuff, you have alot more control in what you display and how etc and for that price in my view its worth the money.Lorraine
gerardkParticipant?210 for the domain? ? Thats a BIG difference from ‘and $9US/year for the domain name’.
MarkKeymasternolongerParticipantAhh, I see now why I didn’t use the free hosting that came with my domain – it’s ad supported. Blech. However, if you get regular, $2.99/month hosting from GoDaddy, they will throw in a domain for $1.99/year. That’s pretty dang cheap.
AliParticipanthi Madthing,
I purchased my domain from hosting365 http://www.alisonboland.com for approx. ?10 euro including VAT.
Firstly if i was you i’d think of a domain name and register it straight away, you don’t have to
have it hosted immediately. At the moment i don’t pay hosting as the company offered me a trial of their business plan.
You should look around for hosting – There are new companies who will host free who didn’t have ads
or banners, but the up-time is definitely not guaranteed. As for my own site, i add bits to it as i get bored.
My site is more or less an informal homepage. As for the reasons why i set up my site, mixture
of things, somewhere to let photographers see my portfolio, somewhere for me to host my photography..etcHope this helps :).

ciaranParticipantI’m another hosting365 user.. http://www.thewonderoflight.com
Domain cost me 10 euros and hosting is 4 euros a month for up to 3Gig bandwidth and GREAT control over configuration. It’s also easy and cheap to add additional bandwidth as the need arises.
bahiaParticipantAnd why not google webpage, is for free… By the way here?s mine… 8) :D

MoyaParticipantI’m also with godaddy.com. Very cheap for domain and basic hosting…..my bro did all the techy stuff….we’ve now set up a simple system using Dreamweaver which means I can manage the site myself. It’s actually quite easy…even for someone like me who’s not a big techy person!
jlangParticipantTook me a while to think up a good domain name but once I found afewscoops.com was still free, I couldn’t not register it. So after that, I put up the front page just to see what was involved and to have something at the www location that matches my email address. Registered at godaddy.com, hosted at hostaffect.com – $15 for the year.
The hosting seems good value for what is included but $15 isn’t really a lot of money to lose if I need to find another host. I’ve no complaints at all but then it’s not exactly be a high traffic site and I back it all up offsite every night with a cron job, just in case. Most of my content isn’t linked from the front page – galleries from holidays and friends’ weddings that I don’t really need to show up in google/flickr. I’ll probably redo the front page when I get another bout of boredom/inspiration or maybe stick a WordPress install there.
MJ749ParticipantI do not have my own site but if I ever should have it will look like this websites http://www.sumopix.com/en . They produce photo on canvas and the website is very simple and nice structure.
