Was thinking of taking number 1 daughter to the zoo this week and was wondering which zoo in your esteemed opinion would be the best to take her to Dublin or belfast as it will take about the same time to get to either from where I am opinions anyone?

(and not interested in the zoos good or bad debate anyone who asks cause numerous medium format camera to wink out of existence :) )

Myself and Sean took a run up to Belfast zoo a few weeks back and I was well impressed
No problems with the cameras at all
Only thing it is quite hilly and I dont know what age your daughter is so she might get tired
My Daughter is 10 and Seans boys are 11 and 8 and they slept the whole way home…bonus…
There are lots of picnic benches also to take your pack lunch and there is a small cafe at the top of the hill

    Mark,

I’ve not been to Belfast Zoo, but I think Dublin Zoo is fantastic. I’ve been in other zoos, Bristol, Sydney and more, and Dublin zoo is even better than those in my opinion.

I don’t have kids, any time I’ve been to Dublin Zoo its been myself and the wife on our own, and we’ve spent hours there (4 and half the first time… 3 hours a few weeks ago)

Its definitely worth it. Oh, and have a quick look at my flickr stream for the shots I took while there a few weeks ago, you’ll see if you think it’s open enough for you to shoot :)

I also think the zoos should have an adults only day 1 day a week… but that’s another argument :)

Like Jody, I haven’t been to Belfast, but Dublin Zoo is very good and seems to be improving all the time.

It’s well worth the day out. If it’s fine worth bring a wee picnic or something too. Plenty of picnic benches around, lots of little playgrounds for the kids too.

I think when I read your “adults only” comment my mind started to wander in the wrong direction… “Jody milking Elephant” and things like that.

Just the meerkats for me. Elephants are too ambitious

By the way. It’s my one fault with Dublin Zoo. They’ve taken the meerkats out of their old enclosure and put them behind a glass enclosure in the restaurant. The cynic in my says that its because the kids will want to see them, and then will want drinks and food when the adults have the take them through the restaurant in order to look at them through the glass. Its very very annoying

    I quite agree.

It’s a very cynical meerkating ploy by Dublin Zoo to sell more food and drink.
