I have a D80 and a D300 and am seriously considering the D700. I’ve tried one out and they are amazing. When I got my D300 I went for all full frame lenses so I wouldn’t have the lens problem for the next upgrade.
Maybe have a look at the D300s, or I’m fairly sure either a D700s or D800 will be released pretty soon. Cameras tend to be upgraded about every two years or so by Nikon.
If you went for a D300s and spent the extra money on some really nice lenses that may be better. I have the Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 wide angle lens that is really sweet and is full frame. Just my two cents worth.
I bought the Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 about a year ago and am delighted with it. It’s a full frame lens so if you upgrade from a cropped sensor to a full frame camera you won’t have to change the lens.
I’d love to pick up the Nikon 14-24 2.8, but the wallet wouldn’t stretch that far. The Sigma has proved to be a great cheap alternative.
There really is no one lens that will do, and also it would be handy if you had more than one body. Could you borrow an extra body from someone? I tend to use two or three bodies when I shoot a wedding. Also, I use 5 lenses for each wedding. There may be lenses that never get out of the bag, but better to have and not need, than need and not have. I use:
Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6, 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, 50 f1.4, and 105 f2.8. I use all these lenses on a D300.
A decent tripod and flash, and if you have the room a reflector or two.
You can do courses in Griffith College. They start at a one year diploma.
I wouldn’t discount the Institute of Photography courses though. I started off on them, did the wedding one, studio, improvers etc. and found them very good. I’m now full-time, and the business is building, slowly, but still building…
Aldi, ITB Medion hard drive, €79.99, just on special today.
Personally I have 2 hard drives backing up onto each other and all photos burned to DVD along with Lightroom back-ups etc. Never lost a photo. Oh dear god, did I just say that???
I bought a Sigma 12-24mm last year and when I took it out of the box it refused to focus. After a bit of coaxing the manual focus worked but auto focus was more stubborn. Sent it back and got a replacement which is purring happily to this day.
I’ve been playing around with macro for a little while, and I took the plunge and picked up the Nikon 105mm f2.8, and all I can say is WOW. It is an amazing lens.
The photo attached was taken out my back garden with terrilble light ona D300. Very little processing after the shot, just exposure tweeks in Lightroom.
I couldn’t reccomend the lens highly enough, Also, is a great portrait lens.
I use GMS. They’re based in dublin, and tend to want the files in Jpeg format. They post the photos out very quickly, and I’ve never had any issues with the print quality. And they print whatever size you want.
