Well I’ve always wanted to do something like this but felt it was a bit cliched. I guess what I was trying to do was take a photo of something normal enough, almost boring and just have this darker element off to the side to throw it a little. Anybody photographing New York in the 80s had piles of similar photos so I was never sure if it’d work. They’re almost always better in B&W too.
I’m in Dublin and know of a few more examples, So might have a go at them and see how it goes
Thanks for the input everyone. I have a tendency to deliberately frame photos so the main subject is to the side etc. I think it only works for me as I know what I’m looking for. I’ll take a few shots at the weekend and see how they pan out.
Thanks for the reply. Do you think I should have the runners as the main focus? I have very shaky hands so need to use a tripod, will have to run out into the road for that. What about the colouring etc. Do you thik its okay?
No probs. It was about 8.30 in the morning. There’s no detail cos there wasn’t anything actually there except a wall of mist. The sun was just breaking through to the left of the photo.
Had a look at Mick’s work as suggested and definitely see where you’re coming from, but I felt that a frosty morning, as this was, has a greater effect if it’s bright.
I have a tendency to leave in big foregrounds and backgrounds and agree here again it’s a bit too big, but I wouldn’t like to cut too much off as i think it emphasises a sort of “stand alone” quality in the trees??
I like this, but (possibly an unfair criticism as I’m from the area) I always feel this particular church ruin is more dramatic when you give a sense of the barrenness around it? Did you take it recently?
They’re the exact same probs I saw with it. I took the photo with my arms stretched over my head and it came out all wonky but I couldn’t straighten it completely without cutting the moon out.
I figured leaving the moon in was a better idea as I felt Dun Laoghaire was too far away for it to suit a simply panaromic shot.
TBH I like sky photos and thought the moon might give me an excuse.
Do you think a simple crop to make it a panoramic shot would leave D’Laoghaire too small?
These are the kinda interesting shots I like. Though I would have done the following. Cut the grass out of the way and had the landscape in focus as opposed to the telly. The stuff around the edges is a distraction I think. Where’d you take it?
Only got it at Christmas. My old man and me got one each. The last 2 left in the Argos’s in Derry. Clearance sale and all that. I don’t intend on moving up for a very long time to be honest. It’s a good camera and if a photo I take using it doesn’t come out the best it’s usually my own fault. I just need a bigger memory card for it :)
Actually my old man is a bit of an influence on the photography side of things. When he had our house built he had a darkroom built into the garage! Our childhood was spent inhaling chemicals running around in white coats. :)
I think this would be a great photo to mess about with in photoshop. You have a beautiful blend in the colours in the sky that could be played with. It’d be nice if the bottom part where the green is just visible were a little lighter, again could be done in photoshop. That’s a personal thing though.
Thanks very much. I appreciate the commments greatly. I was suprised at how well it came out. I took it with a pretty rudimentary Fuji camera Finepix s5600 which hasn’t done too well in my attempts to take lanscape shots
