Class shots, better than anything i’ve seen from the day!
Hard to nail the sharpness with those shutter speeds and anything larger than your typical 400px internet thumbnail tends to show up any shortcomings in technique, didn’t seem to be anything dangerous about where you were positioned, basically on the inside of a corner (turn4?) and a lot less likely to be hit than *cough some lads :mrgree
Now Brendan, If you know Mondello Park like you are implying than you would know that shot was taken at the exit of turn two. Up on a 5 – 6 foot bank, Approx 50 to 50 foot from point of impact of the bikes. With being up on the bank there is a smaller chance of being struck by a bike.
And with a 70-200 with a 2Xtc it is easer to get closer to the action.
I was at a race two days ago and witnessed this man [Martin Finnegan RIP] travel up a 30ft embankment, straight though a fence and into 3 spectators, it’s a lot safer on the inside of the corner :!:

You should apply to mondello for a press-pass, start getting photos published as shots like those are great for promoting the sport, few of my pics from the day here, try the road racing too, turn up early as it’s hard to get a good spot with all the spectators.
Good photos, nice fast focus, exposure control and bright viewfinder on the D80 (Nikkor 18-200mm lens here) and while noise control is generally very good, ISO 1000 & 1/4000th seem very high for those bright sunny days last weekend, try setting the ISO to ‘auto’ on your panning shots for a larger aperture & better motion effect and maybe aim for between 1/500 – 1/1250 for head on pics, and then crop tightly around the cars.
Here’s a few more from the Galway International (Nikon D80 also) ;
AWESOME shot, don’t mind those flower snappers 8) (although the pan european in the background is disturbing..)
I love messing with slow shutter speeds and 1/30th sec is a tricky pan handheld, 1/15th is even better for isolating a particular section of the subject in focus ;
Fundamentally good pics Derek, just a little dark and gloomy as Dave said, maybe crop out the unnecessary background, autocorrect levels and sharpen a little in Photoshop.
Good technique (slow shutter speeds seperate the men from the mushrooms) so maybe its time to invest in a better lens for more light and detail.
