Sorry guys, have been busy, pics up, around all day and on the phone, so call or text. Have a birthday for the wee one from 3 to 5, so might not answer during that…
As I said, I ain’t offering any opinions one way or the other, because I have a sneaking suspicion this guy knows what a lawsuit is and how to instigate one against anyone he see’s fit.
I know that the models have to pay a fee when they get to interview, and that there is a requirement that they have to sell 10 tickets for the semi final or final if they get that far (at €60 a pop) and all this info is presented in their terms on their site. After that, I don’t know what happens. But, the main man I spoke to gave a figure of 25000 girls whom applied this year, if every one of them went to interview and paid, well thats a big number with lots of noughts in it right there. Nothing wrong with making a profit though….
I have no doubt whatsoever that what they are doing is totally and utterly legal and above board, as the competition authority over sees their business dealings, (agin, this is what I was told) and they have numerous high profile clients and sponsers who you would imagine would not involve themselves in a scam of any shape or form.
But, and its a big fat but, what they are doing is pretty morally questionable on a few levels. Thats opinion, but feck i, I’m giving it anyway.
They seem to want to squeeze as much as they can out of everyone they come into contact with, anyone naive enough to get drawn into there promise of something, which quite frankly, ain’t great. Have a look at what the prize’s are for the winning model here. I know they wanted to con me, it was pretty obvious really, if you didn’t let him dazzle you with all his bull shit, but the models really do think there gonna win and their wallets are emptied in the process. As I said, it’s probably totally legit, and some would argue some of the girls deserve to be fleeced. Fair enough. Wouldn’t like to make my living that way, thats all I’m saying.
From speaking to others who know more then me, if you have got ‘it’ as a model, no money pass’s from you to the agency, they cover everything, and recoup their investment when you become established on their books..
And for the life of me, I have never ever come across a scenairio where I have been asked to pay the client to provide a service to them on the back of a vague promise of making 6 and 7 times my initial investment. Some poor fool may fall for it, but it won’t be me, and I will make sure anyone involved in the photographic profession whom I speak to will know how I feel about this and the people who are behind it.
Its hard enough out there without people like this making it harder, but there’s a sucker born every minute, hence why these guys are still in existence.
That “possibility” is just an unconfirmed rumor, same as rumors about Canon 60D or 24-70 f/2.8 L IS.
Moreover even if they announced it, it will take another few months till it will be available in stock and it´s price will be higher than the price of the current D700.
PS: “second hands would flood into the market” – nonsense, D700 is a camera for serious photographers who don´t replace their equipment everytime there´s a new release. I visited Sheldon´s studio and he still uses Nikon D2H which was announced in 2003 so why would anyone sell a camera from 2008?
Still a possability. September is usually the month of new releases.
Nonsense?? Yeah….. Second hand market always gets a glut when a replacement camera/lens is released. Serious photographers are known to upgrade the odd time…
there is a lot of truth in the argument tht you could wait forever… however i have seen nothing that ays a 700 replaceeent is on the horizon and the d700.com site predicted an upgraded modell last year…
There’s a possability that a replacement will be announced some time in the autumn… if it is, my ‘strategy’ as MMX calls it, would pay off, as the the price of D700’s would fall by a few percent, and second hands would flood into the market…
The D700 is a great camera, pretty much a D3 in a smaller body, add the battery grip and you have the same FPS as you do with the d3. Even if a replacement comes out soon, you’ll be very happy with your purchase.
Yep, I use the D700 as a backup to other bodies and find it a great camera. I will echo other advice and say hold on for a couple of months and you’ll pick them up for much cheaper than they are now…saying that, I have seen them priced in an around 1300 sterling in some places, which, although a lot of money, still cheaper thna it was….
Saw this on facebook, you must be chuffed their using it as their season poster. I really like it, lovely mood and feel to it. Good work. We’ll have to catch up for a coffee sometime…
If you are registered for VAT and are charging it but not paying it to the revenue commissioners then you could get in big trouble, regardless of the amount.
Aedan
I DO pay Vat! FFS, if I have issues on VAT or any other element of my business I talk to my accountant. I’m not great with accounts, hence why I’m a photographer, who employs an accountant. Sorry if I gave out wrong info, but do not imply that I don’t pay VAT!
