I have a Nikon SB 800 which has also died. It’s powering up but none of the normal functions are working. I seem to remember someone menttioning that there is an official Nikon repair centre somewhere around the Navan area. Bought a SB 900 in its place, and also have a SB 600 but would love to have the 800 back in action. Besides I intend to start doing some off camera flash work and will need at least three or more flash guns.
Hi Mark, Yes I had the diffuser enabled, that must be why I could not change back to auto zoom. Thanks a mill for that, it was beginning to do my head in but as is always the case with me it was something simple in the end. What’s the logic behind it though, does not seem to make much sense to me, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been caught out by this. Thanks again for the tip.
Thanks Cian, Have tried that and I did manage to get it back to auto setting once last week but the next time I went to use it was back in manual mode and I cannot change the settings now. Its obviously something simple but I cannot hack it. Could only happen to me.
Thanks for responce lads, Paddy we’ve spoken on the phone. I’m the guy up in Longford who has been pricing large format printers off you recently.well I’ve since been in contact with the official Nikon people in Meath and all I’m waiting for now is to get the flash back from where it was first left in for repairs. If I’d known about them before hand…………..Anyway in answer to Cian the flash starts up as normal and I can enter and change the menus ok but it does not go into the flash ready mode nor does the ready mode light come on. I’ve tried different batteries but to no avail.
I have since purchased an sb 900 but would love to have the 800 back in working order as I want to experiment with off camera flash with it and my other flash the sb 600.I presume I will be able to use all three together.
Hi again, I’ll have to have a look at the camera, just a question. Is it in perfect working order, otherwise I’m not interested. Send me your mobile with your reply. I,m in Dublin tomorrow evening, Jury’s Croke Park Hotel 7pm.
The long awaited sucessor to the legendary r2400 has just been announced by Epson and will be in the shops in the U.K. by end of June, pity I,ve just purchased a new r2400 but it’s such a class printer I’m not too bothered.
Cheers for all the replies – I’ve read various reviews of the cameras suggested, and am leaning toward Nikon, still confused about which model though.
I will let you know when I’ve made the big purchase(s) :)
Although relatively new to dslr I would’nt get too caught up in megapixels if I were you, before plumping for a d200 I would strongly advise you to go for the d70s kit. There is a lot of learning to be done and a lot of accesories to be purchased. Get to know your camera and how it works, what it can and cannot do. You will have to beef up on storage and dedicated printers. A laptop while not essential is very usefull. The choice of len’s is enormous and a minefield. Unless you get good advice you can end up buying a lens which is overpriced and overhyped. Like me you gotta crawl before you walk. Best of luck when you get going, will keep an eye open for your posts.
Can anyone recommend a suitable digital camera to start off with?
I’ve been using a Fuji S5000, but I’d like to get something a bit more serious!
Around ?15-1600?
I opted for the nikon d70s kit with a 1gb card which I bought in Jessops Manchester, I reckon I saved around ?150 euro over Irish prices. There are several dedicated camera equipment sites on the net inc. pixmania and microglobe. Check them out before you decide. I also went for the tamron 70/300 telephoto lens which is quite cheap at ?150 euro and a very good lens for the price.
The 17/55 is reputed to be very good in low light because of its speed but a guy in a camera shop in Killarney( forget his name ) rekons its not worth the expense. I took a lot of long shots ( Tamron 70/300 ) at the Longford Kerry game in Killarney and was surprised at how well they came out, I purchased it in Jessops recently on the strength of a budget lens comparison in Digital Photo back in March/April but I’m tempted to go now for extra distance with the 70/500. Wildlife nature and sport would be my scene in that order.
Hi Mark,
As a rank novice with a d70s 18/70 lens and a tamron 70/300 telephoto for long shots, while on holiday recently I was recomended the nikon 17/55 2.8 which I could have bought for ?1200 in Gibralter. As I am not suffiecently technically minded to be in a position to evaluate the lens I shied away from the purchase ans came away just buying a few filters. Since returning from holiday I have been qouted ?1589 from Jessops in Dublin but could get it for ?1500. Have you any experience of this lens or alternatively what mid price lens would you recommned, the 18/70 is reasonable but no master piece. Also what long telephoto would you recommend, what price a good 70/500.
