I had the same problem when I started doing home printing. Calibration won’t sort out the issues with the darkness of your prints but it will match the colour from your monitor to your printer.
When you are doing editing on your backlit monitor it will always be brighter than what you see on paper. I use Aperture for editing and when it comes to printing it allows you to increase the brightness before you print which isn’t stored in your edit and this is what I do. I’m sure in photoshop you can apply an action that will allow you to do the same but I don’t print from photoshop so I’m not sure. The easiest way to figure out how much brightness to add is to test print, try applying various factors and see which works best for you (mine usually require a 22% increase in brightness to get my print to match my screen)
Of course if you are editing on a laptop be wary that changing the screen angle will change the brightness you perceive each time you edit photos.
Jenny – your right, it was a rose, brain was obviously switched off when I was tagging the image.
Mark – it took quite a bit of practice to figure out how to focus with the filters attached. I put on manual focus and then move the lens back and forth to and from the subject while looking through the viewfinder until I got close, then steadied myself and tried to get the focus spot on.
I shoot with a D3000 and the 35mm 1.8. I don’t have experience with other DSLR’s but can tell you I have been more than happy with this setup (I’ve even managed to sell a few prints/licenses with it). In the near future I am planning on upgrading my body but will keep the D3000 as a backup/second body with this prime on it.
As far as I can tell it doesn’t have dedicated hard buttons on it and the lack of motor will restrict other lenses functionality but as you said you will be using an af-s lens. I’ve read a lot of posts (on other forums) complainig about the noise issues with this camera but I’ve printed up to 8×12 photos taken at ISO1600 (the highest on this camera) and found the noise not to be an issue. The camera doesn’t have live on it.
I don’t think Nikon are making this camera now they’ve introduced the D3100 so it can be picked up pretty cheap but not as cheap as a D40 or D70 on ebay so they are some other ones to look into maybe?
I also highly recommend the Nikon 55-200 VR, had it about a year and love it. There are plenty of 2nd hand ones knocking around ebay for about 90-100 euro.
I think I’d return to Houston and shoot the city from the 62nd floor of the Chase building at nighttime. Been up there twice during the day and the view is spectacular. The landscape is so flat that the view from that high is monstoreous and I’d say the night lights would be amazing.
