Got this flash last week after reading through this thread. What a bargain, don’t have much experience with off camera flash but the results, i think, are astonishing. So glad I got this and not one of the cheaper speedlights, the ability to tilt the angle of the flash is like night and day, really removes that harshness and gives such a subtle clarity whilst keeping that ambience. Will upload some of the tests later to see what you camera buffs think. I find using the flash is like starting to learn how to take photos all over again

In the same boat here myself for my 550d. Have heard a lot of good things about the Nissin(link below), as a cheaper alternative to the Speedlites, has TTl compatability too. Although can’t vouch myself for it as haven’t used it.
Would love to hear some advice too!

Iv been using the Transcend cards mysefl too for a while now. Can fully vouch for them myself!

Picked up the 32gb CL10 SDHC card for £40 on amazon. Had no problems this past 3 months with it. The big bonus for me was the price and the fact it was class 10 means it can handle HD video on my 550d. I don’t know how much the class issue will be an issue if your not shooting video but a future proofing consideration possibly.

Just make sure you get an SD or SDHC card as opposed to the CF (compact flash) card which is linked below.

Can only agree with everything said above. Read the manual, take pictures, use the internet, take pictures, experiment, take pictures, and use this site. Fantastic resource.
Got the 550d myself there last month as a beginner and through experimentation and the helpful folk here at PI have gotten a new lens and taken some great photos (at least in my eyes anyway  )
    Best of luck!

First outing last night and now again tonight. Loved it. Great experience altogether. Was hard enough getting to grips with the dark shooting and focusing on the right places with such a wide aperture. Have a few photos up but will be during the week before I get sorted through em. Heres some examples anyway, any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks for the feedback, hes some pup, pardon the pun.

Wasn’t overly sure on the last one myself, I simply liked the terror going on behind the placid foreground of the ball. Although the imagery mightn’t be powerful enough to get that through. Maybe try and capture the idea with a better shot

Excellent! Lens just arrived this morning, so will hopefully get to give it a test run at the weekend at a gig. Im sure il have plenty of questions after the first outing. You can only read up on so much and then the rest is all down to experimentation I guess.

Thanks for all the help, will report back with a few snaps :D

    Excellent information!
The spot metering tip sounds great, not something I would have figured out myself at all.

Ordered the 50mm last night so when it arrives and I get experimenting with a few of these techniques I will upload the results to see how im faring. Thought I would start off at the lower end of the price spectrum and see how seriously I want to take it before spending the big bucks on an even better lens.

Sounds good, hard to justify buying it locally (as much as it pains) me when there is a £170 price difference with brand new on digigood

Think I’ll make the jump then. Would hope to never need the warranty either, but murphies law and all that

Brilliant, things I never even considered!

Will edit the branches when I get home this evening, would ‘content aware’ in CS5 be a good way to effectively remove these?

I believe that what you see in photo 1 is the full frame of the photo , although I will double check the originals tonight.

Also agree with the darkening of the sky, now I look close at the sky it looks terrible! Was always too busy focusing on the subject and not the background

I studpidly forgot to even consider what sort of warrenty would be offered through that seller!
    Will definately check that out.

Im lead to believe it is a US name like the ‘Rebel’ tag, thought I may aswell throw it out there though incase it could have been a different model entirely.

Thanks, going to do a bit more research then build up the courage to part with my cash!

    Great, that sound promising!
Have read endless reviews and watched numerous videos but you can’t beat hearing some first hand experience.

I don’t own any canon gear myself but have the option of getting a lend of some lenses from a buddy, so this alone is stearing me towards the canon. Don’t know whether this is a clever thing or not?

Have seen an awful lot of these or the Kiss X4, as I have seen it been called, on sale on ebay for round the £500 mark. I presume the 550d and the Kiss X4 are the same camera only with an alternative name?

Also, the ebay seller known as ‘digigood’ who seem to deal quite heavily in selling on this camera, any info on them? Would it be safe to assume given the strong positive rating and consistent selling of the item that it is a reliable source? Just incase on the off chance there are counterfeits or a well known defect in these and I am naive to the issue
