Hi Brian, I just today ordered a v600 from elara for 280 incl vat,I had originally looked for the 550 but no one locally had them and they were priced around 250, so it was a surprise to see the 600 for about 70 euro cheaper than advertised elsewhere. They also had the 550 for around 220 I think it was with free delivery or pickup, their in parkwest.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have been drying on several lines Peter, still run out of space though. Dust is my worst enemy too,my darkroom is in a shed which doesn’t help, that’s why I was thinking a plastic of some kind would be best, easy to wipe down with a damp cloth before using. Thanks for the link Tex,I’ll give it a read.

The water conservation thing put me off using fiber paper since I started printing, even before talk of paying for water came up. I eventually got an archival washer and found a study on them on fadu, it recommended the Ilford way, Fixer 1-4,Print 1 minute in fixer,5 minute pre wash,10 minutes in hypo, five minute final wash. Actually, it could have been Ilford recommending the study’s way. I can live with using that amount of water, which is about 1.5 litre’s per minute for the wash in my yoke, that’s 4 prints per wash, probably saving hundreds of litre’s per cycle. I use twice as much fixer though.

Hope it goes well for them. Another Kickstarter that’s coming soon is from this crowd http://www.theintrepidcamera.co.uk/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; . Aiming for a sub £130 sterling price which if achieved would be a great price for a 4×5 camera. It’s kickstarter though,I’m still waiting for my wanderlust 4×5,only about 8 months late at this stage

I haven’t picked any recently, I would recommend worldofbooks,.. http://www.worldofbooks.com/arts-books/photography-and-photographs.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;, I’ve got a few of interest in the past with very good prices, there is some dribble there but well worth a browse.

I’d second the concern about the electronics, the 580 is dedicated to Canon,as you know, and probably shoots at a frequency way outside what your camera is designed for, I read somewhere, probably boards, that you can fry your dedicated flash by using it on manual camera’s. Your best bet if you want dedicated is to go for a Metz or similar with a sca, you get all the ttl and ettl stuff that way. The flash go fairly cheap online,I picked up a metz cl1 for 40 quid a while back, which works fine with my etrsi without the sca,,which cost about €50 for bronica btw. In say all that,I’d rather just use a normal non dedicated flash on the hot shoe or a sync lead rather than risk the canon if I were you.

Fair play Isabella, I love having a go myself, although my results are usually a bit ramshackle  In order to maintain your low cost budget,I can donate some silicon carbide if your planning on making the ground glass yourself, frame glass is about the same thickness as ground I believe.

That drum looks fairly easily make able Peter, the pipe can be got in any builders providers, you can also get the stop ends, although securing one side so it’s removable without leaking would probably be a challenge, although you can get rubber stops that may work,a hole drilled for the smaller pipe with a rubber stop are easily got too. The holders looks very similar to the gadgets that hold waste pipe on walls. Standard waste pipe is 4” but you can get bigger

Yea Tom I priced all the bits last year but it was working out very expensive. Biggest pipe I could find was about 16 inch diameter which would suit a mitre wide print.

I see what you mean Peter, yikes it is expensive. Is aluminium an option, although I’d guess a lot harder to make water tight, but I’ve seen off cuts of around that size in salvage yards many times.
