Nice setting for this kinda shot – the monotone feel works really well! My only slight gripe is that it’s a shame that the droplet isn’t a little further into the frame.
Clearly a heavily post processed shot, with a very distinct style. Personally, I think it works a treat. Love the way the rim of the glasses stands out against the dark background.
Nice set, Ross! The last is my fave. Great to see something other than the typical dry, sunny shot when everyone is out with their cameras – love the atmosphere in them.
On a general note, what kinda stuff did the course cover? Was it aimed at the beginner, or was it quite advanced? Always looked at courses like these, but wondered if I’d find it valuable or not….
Andy, what do you do to keep the lens dry in pissing rain? On my photography course in the Peak District we visited the Derwent Valley Reservoir (of DamBusters fame) and I couldnt keep the rain drops off my lens. Normally I wouldn’t even have been out, but we tried to use trees for some shelter. Others (more wise than me) used umbrellas over the camera and lens. Is that something you would do? It struck me that one of those big fishermen umbrellas might be the answer…?
Ross
On a serious note..
I use a plastic bag and a rubber band, in conjunction with a lens hood! Cheap and nasty, but works well! Also, I keep a chamoix handy for times when hands / equipment gets a little damp.
You should know by now that you don’t NEED the golden hour….
Just get a copy of Photoshop.. Drop in a new sky. Push the colour temperature. Boost the contrast & saturation. Bingo. It’s what ALL the clever cats do nowadays ;)
PS – for anyone that didn’t detect the liberal smear of sarcasm… I’m JOKING…
I have a copy, so don’t need it, but in my opinion, this is THE authoritative resource on Photoshop. If you don’t have it, buy this copy. ?20 is a bargain!
Note:
Frank – I’ll gladly accept 10% for assisting with your sale :D
You should know by now that you’re only allowed to be good at one genre of pics!! I hope you weren’t tucked in your hide when you took this!
Glad to see you went with the flash over the Nikon. Imagine the disappointment of going to the zoo with your brand spanky new Nikon, WITHOUT a white lens attached… everyone would just think you were an amateur :D
PS – cracking timing, composition, exposure and DOF.
Personally, I’d distort the image to put the lighthouse vertical, and I’d give it a tiny little rotation, and the horizon’s not quite straight (only by a tiny fraction though!)
While I like the shot in general, it just doesn’t quite make me go wow, and I’m not sure why. I think possibly just the rock doesn’t hold enough interest for me, so that the lighthouse is the sole focal point without much left to look at, if that makes sense… Maybe a little earlier / later in the day would have given a little more shadow along the rocks, adding to the impact? Just a few thoughts…
