    Welcome John !

Sounds like a great job you’ve got there.

I bought Mike Brown’s last book. Really great and worth buying.

As this is meant to be a critique forum and not a ‘great shot’ forum :) , I thought that I better add some critique.

It doesnt really do it for me as a sports shot. Looking down from a height on the climber isn’t the ideal position to take the photograph from
in my opinion. It would have been better along side him, ie closer.

Seems to be a cross between a landscape image and a sports image but not really one or the other if you know what I mean.

I think it is, absolutely. Its very much depends on the individual. Myself I just see it as a mechanism
for getting up off my ass and getting out to take photographs, i.e. its motivational.

Whether I win or not, doesn’t really matter to me all that much. Its fun.

Life is a competition. Everything we do is competitve, if not with others but with ourselves.
Myself I compete with myself on every shot I take (must start posting shortly btw).

The fact that there is a competition on the site here, is a positive introduction, fair play to Mark and SteveD
for starting it. Its a competition, surely it can be fun ? If competition and being competitive isn’t fun for people
then don’t get involved in competition here or anywhere. Noone is forcing anyone to.

Might be alot of photos, but still worth making some comments I think.

First colour shot: Might be better to make it more abstract by cropping the top.
I like it anyhow, good leading lines, dynamic

Also think the second colour is a good one, pity the sky’s are a bit flat.

Third colour: The horizon is wonky ;)

Last colour photo: I love the flowers on the green grass very nice. Pity the sky is blown out.
Maybe with photoshop you can rescue the sky though

On the b+w, most would have been helped by a better sky, but you have to take what comes your way :)

The second b+w has got a great sky imho, bit blown out to the right though, but still the clouds are nice.
    Nice conversation too.

    First, welcome to the site.

Normally you’d take a shot at eye level, normally that is.
But in this the high angle doesn’t detract to much from the photograph
as the childs face is raised.

Looks like you used some fill flash also ? Something which most beginners would forget.
Would have been better had the hope of the hat/head not been cut off.

I like the dynamic angle you’ve taken the shot with.
Some blown highlights but it kind off adds to the feel of the photograph.

Must say I like it, not sure why, but it has appeal

    Welcome Tom !!

There’s a few Cork based photographers on here that should be able to help you out.

Mark the admin is from West Cork I think, at least thats where most of his coastal photos are from

Looking forward to seeing some of your photos too.

    Gulp. They’re very good Noely.

First one is very good indeed, so sharp and that last one, the reflection of the flowers is
    very well done.

What macro lens were you using ?
