Miki, you are right as in some countries there are different regulations than in others. As an example in US a woman sued a microwave company after her dog died while she was trying to dry him in the microwave. In my country the judge will send this woman to the psychiatric but in US she won the case, or at least that’s what I heard…And thanks for your advice, I know you have good intentions :)
5faythe, you are completely right. I have nothing else to say as you said everything. I suppose I just felt discouraged and that’s why I replied this way…
I thanked everybody for their help, but I gave my opinion too, which is different. I never offended anyone and I have to say that I felt discouragement instead of help.
Everything can need insurance and I can be sued for everything. But if I would have posted a thread asking for locations to go cycling I am sure nobody is going to say that I need to get insurance in case I hit someone…and that’s what I said, that I never asked about regulations, that’s all, just about ideas where to shoot…
But as I said already, I am sorry if somebody feel offended…
Sorry if I offended someone or if “my attitude kind of sucks” for someone. I think the problem here is that I did the mistake to post into the business forum as I was looking for different kind of advice. For example, when I asked other photographers for locations, they give ideas but not start to give advices about regulations, etc…
Now, said that, I still believe in my attitude and as you did, I just said what I believe. How do you know that I am using lights or models. If I am using small flash and the models are friends of mine, what makes the difference between this and take photos of your friends in a cafe.
And, not, I am not selling this kind of photos…just abstracts ones…
Thanks for your business advices but as I said I was not looking for that, I never asked about regultaions… (and I have recognized the mistake of posting in the wrong forum section). Does this attitude sucks, why? Because I am honest?
Thanks for that Miki as I think you really believe what you are saying, but I think you think too much about regulations.
This is about art, not about business, not about rules… I don’t need insurance to go with people and take photos in a cafe, otherwise you will need insurance to take photos of your friends in any pub…
Thanks Ashley for all your information, “encouragement” and analysis of my message, but I can understand the difference between commercial and personal use. It is easy as understand the word “commerce” so I have no intentions of selling prints but to get a good body of work to get notice in the industry.
Well now you know – it’s pretty much the standard location fee rate, for commercial use, across the UK.
(£500 is usually the starting fee – it could be £1,500 or more – depending on the location, size of the property, uniqueness, etc)
If you expect that a student pay 1500 £ for one day of shooting, I think you did your studies in very expensive private schools. Here is where you should understand the difference between student trying to have success and a successful commercial photographer. And as I am not a successful COMMERCIAL photographer, I cannot pay this.
Best to ask around your close friends and family then.
Not only friends and family, whom I have asked already, can help you on this, but some people do things for the mere fact of helping and not thinking only about money.
Credited … as in ‘a great place where you can get to shoot for free’
Or credited as a beautiful place to go after seeing the exhibition (cafe, pub, etc.), it is all depends with the eyes you look at it ;-)
And the mention of “possible publication” is starting to sound like commercial use here
Have you ever see the leaflets on an exhibition? that’s a publication and it is not commercial, just an example…
Ashley, the shoots will be for an exhibition project for my college, so non commercial. It is interesting to know what you offer, but 500 £ per shooting is completely out of my budget :( Actually I was looking to do it for free or cheap as there is not money involve, just art :) The locations will be credited in exhibition and possible publication…
