Tex: Yes, lens was set to 17mm (FF). The church is on a mound and the land all around it falls away rapidly so the camera was well below the floor level of the church which probably didn’t help with the distortion. The ‘concrete block’ is actually a lone headstone which I had hoped would add some fg interest but I can see how you see it as a block. To be honest, I think I should have cloned out the white floodlights!

Pippatee: You are right about the subject being very central. Ideally, I wanted the church L shape to be offset and lying on a vertical and horizontal third line but there were too many distractions outside the frame on both sides. I tried just cropping to offset the church but ended up losing too much sky.

Thank you both very much for taking the time to view and comment – much appreciated!

Thanks, Jenny. Yes, I’m glad I went for the different colours and types for the candles. The second candle is actually broken but it came out looking more bent with a piece out of it! I was hoping for a broken look.

Thanks, Martin. Yes, it was early morning light and this caught my eye as I was driving past! Agree about the branches – I wanted to frame the tower but was mad with myself that I didn’t notice the incursion. I might try and PS them out.

Liam: Thanks, I’ll try a lower pov next time I’m there.

John: Thanks also, that makes a big difference. I’ll give your suggestions a go on the original and see how it turns out.

Thanks for your comments, Phillip. I see what you’re getting at and normally I’d agree that a ‘cleaner’ shot would be better. However, in this case, the point was to take the shot from his grave and this was the only ‘window’ out of the graveyard! Agree about the smaller trees cluttering the shot a bit.

    Hi John,

Thanks for your comments. I had wondered about that. This is already cropped from an image that I thought was too busy (it included the bollard on the quay wall). Maybe there are two images to be had from this one.

Don’t know, Des – I’d be very happy to have taken this! Nice tones.

Sorry, Des. This was taken at the entrance to the harbour at Killybegs, Co. Donegal.

Would agree with the others – second one is really nice.

Many thanks Des & Dave. I had wondered about cropping a bit off the bottom without taking away too much of the ripples. I was a bit horrified at the suggestion of cropping to below the headland initially (I like the ripples) but this may actually transform the image into a much better one! I’ll give it a go and see what happens. Thanks again, guys.

Thanks, Pitmatic. I found that when I cropped to include all of the boat, the gulls got lost a bit. Agree about the background – not ideal but if I changed my pov to reduce the background clutter, I found that the angle of the boat was all wrong. Must try converting to B&W and see how it looks. Appreciate the comments.

Thanks, Mark. I was using the tree branches as a frame so it was lucky that I was also able to use them to cut down the sun. This is on the road between Killybegs and Ardara.

Really nice set, Mark. Real picture postcard material!
