fantastic stuff keith, maybe food for thought but would ya think about burning out the mullingar park hotel sign, although id agree to keep it in, maybe as a printable piece (canvas/framed) it might be better offered without the sign, especially in print?

really loving the one of the bridge by the bath, the flash works really well, very subtle, not too fond of the blue landscaped one, looks much to processed. first one is great too, bit of glare coming off the door though, maybe directing the flash in a more desirable direction may of helped.

im really not sure about the last one, all round its beautifully exposed, really nice stuff, but i keep looking at it and i keep thinking HDR Wedding Photo? haha..its a beautiful shot all the same, maybe its the processing that is putting me off it.

Great Job all round, keep it up!

    Hey John,

Salthill is just on the other side of Galway if you are looking for a beach, in the distance you can see what i believe is Twain Island (im not from Galway ive just been up and down a few times)

Id highly recommend photographing the fields between Gort (South of Oranmore) along the road N18, the stone walls defiantly a site to see in the evening if you feel like field hopping it, take a mosey around that area anyway, very beautiful at the right time of day.

Other then that, Galway city itself is filled with stone streets and small allys if you felt up to some street work around shop street. The pubs are full of your typical irish auld fella drinking a pint and trad music is always on somewhere if you felt like doing a bit of social stuff.

Lough Corrib is just north aswell, ive never been to it but the tail end of it seems roughly in driving distance, maybe a bit too far out of your way if you have limited time but defiantly look up google maps for a nice location to go directly to.

    Enjoy the craic.

    cheers lads

pix – i think thats to do with the barrell distortion for the wide angle on the 17-85 lens. i dont mind it though. =)

i had thought about taking out the trail but decided against it. for my own reasons i suppose.

    Thanks again =)

dont like the first one at all, i can see what you were trying to do but there is not enough silouette detail to define the shape of the music stand. either that or you just havent spotted ur man is out of focus ;)

second one is lovley, there is nice light a nice composition, but maybe too much space at the top or at the bottom, maybe bottom if it was me, maybe try cropping that out a tad?

Its an absolout cracker of an enviromental portrait. But for me the black and white processing is awful in it. dosent compliment the photo.

Over all the lighting seems dull, but im sure that was probably the best light you had at the time these days. Maybe through it back into processing and focus on processing the dull feel from it for the black and white, increase the shadows maybe, add grain to it. dont contrast it tho.

    Great shot!

Micheal Langfords Basic Photography book is what alot of people recommend regardless of what level you are at, its always nice to look over it to brush up. Try head into some charity shops, usually some photo books in there on how to’s from the film days that are still very useful – i have quiet a few of them. Agency books like Magnum that go through all the images from their agencey is great too – good not only for inspiration but also to learn a bit about the masters of photography, theres a few of those types of books around, they dont tell yo how to use a camera but they help inspire you creativity.

well i didnt bother putting a border on it for the net – latley i havent bothered with that kind of thing – if i ever decide to do a large print of it id definatley be doing borders naturally…the internet isnt the place for framing and hanging lol ;)

Deebo – yea i have this fully black and white too looks just as nice. It was processed in black and white and I added a tad saturation at the end.

The top left corner – I think you are seeing the watermark – its not very visable because of the canvas size but i just dumped it on there ;)

Thanks guys for taking the time to comment – appreciated.

I think the lighting is a bit over powering in this, taking from the subject who almost falls out of the rule of thirds, the people arent very obvious in the shot, it looks like a photo of a bar rather then a “quiet boozer”

lifting the camera up to your face rather then having it sit on the table probably would of helped you compose and expose this one better. although it seems like a slow shuter, im sure you could of hand held it.

Sorry for the lack of details. Hopefully this is all the relevant info

    Camera: Nikon D70
Tripod: Manfrotto 190XPROB legs and 460MG Head
File size & PP: 6mp RAW file uncropped with a slight levels adj to blacken the sky
Lens: Nikon 50mm f1.8 prime (very small & light lens)
    Focal Length: 50mm
Camera Settings: 6 sec at f1.8, ISO 200

I expected the clouds to blur with the 6 sec exposure but there shouldn’t be any rotation in the stars at that shutter speed.

    Thanks

    Mark

that 6 seconds is what is causing the clouds to shift, the stars actually dont look like they are streaking on my monitor anyway.

you should close up ur aperture and try an a few min exposures, you get some lovley effects, light pollution can be a problem though – and although clear tonight – its feckin cold!

for a 400euro limit to your budget, after doing a quick google on what some Irish shops are selling, you wont get a dSLR and a lens for that money. maybe if ya try a little harder in looking for a cheaper deal.

you said you want it for motorsport. well you might consider getting a pack, slr body + 2 lenses. there are ebay shops on..ebay..that have deals for around the price you are looking at – ive seen them a couple times and are quiet popular and i believe to be quiet trustworthy.

im saying 2 lenses so you will have your standard zoom lens plus a telephoto lens for the motorsports as you might be quiet a distance from the action (unless of course you can get yourself in closer ;) )

i know this is out of your range by about 300 euro but this is the kinda deal that i always see. and the canon rebel is known to be a great beginners slr camera.

the type of camera really is down to your price range, the more expensive naturally are the better quality cameras but in the end, a camera is a camera, just find the best deal for an slr you can find within your budget and there ya go – dont worry about the models of the camera.

    but do consider this.

When you buy a Nikon, you are probably going to stick with nikon for the rest of your photography “carreer” as everything you buy, will have to fit nikon, this things wont fit a Canon, and likewise vice versa with canon, sony, panasonic, olympus or pentax.

have a look around ebay for a deal on a lens and bags and such or take a look at slrs within your price range in some shops. like i said the more expensive the better quality camera but in the end, a camera is a camera and they all do the same thing.

well this picture of clouds and stars looks to be “camera shake” maybe because of a long exposure (post the EXIF date) – the clouds seem to shake or the stars because of a natural rotation of the earth.

if it wasnt a long exposure, as jb said – it could be your focal lenght (the longer the focal lenght the more shake you are going to get off the longer end) or just a simple shake while exposing.

give us a bit more detail on what you were doing etc.

I like working with film alot more then digital, its alot more hands on, working with a print especially rather then pixels on a screen. I think i only really use digital these days for when im photographing big events or something completely new to me. I wouldnt get rid of your digital stuff, i dont see the point as digitals convienience is really one of its strong points and you might see yourself picking it up for a small gig sometime in the future.

I like the first one best, the angle is nice and you dont need the talker to be upright ,as you know what the photo is about. The main focal point is the poster anyways. Did you not get any shots of me behind the T.E.E.U flags

haha i might of lad, id have to check the negatives ;) i havent really looked through all the photos i took just the ones that stood out to me. good to see so many people out for the march. couldnt believe the lenght of it along the quay.

Thanks randomway, that image actually is one i had alot of trouble printing with, and am not really using it in the final series for that reason because of the extreme backlighting but i bought that one into photoshop and dodged it better then i could do in the darkroom – i must give it another go in there. suppose im just using it because of the obvious irony in it all.

    Thanks again lad.
