I have to-day gone onto amazon and got the Peterson exposure book not only is it recommended here but also on other threads and all over Amazon. I also wanted to get a book on understanding the whole digital process. that was a much harder buy. I eventually went with Doug Harmon’s Digital Photography Handbook. Has anyone else got this. I didn’t like what I read of Scot Kelby’s writing style, so I didn’t get his highly recommended book. Anyway I’ll let you know how I get on when I know myself.

Just redoing this. Can no one recommend a general book on digital photography, that also covers the computer side of things????

Hello ranga. I am new to P.I. as well. In my brief experience I would recommend getting a flash gun. There are various ways of increasing light, increase your exposeure compensation, or lower the iso number your camera is set to. Experiment with aperture settings. The lower the number the more light gets in, or lower your shutter speed which also lets in more light, obviously you have to avoid overexposeure and cammera shake in both cases. I AM NOT AN EXPERT, perhaps if you go to one of the more technical forums you will get more reliable help.

Thanks aoluain what you described makes perfect sense to me and has been helpful.
I guess all this computer stuff gets muddeled in my head especially when there are diferent ways given of doing the same thing. Naturally I want to try and do things in the right or best way.
On another thread there is another system mentioned that is for uploading photos on to P.I. which to be honest is too complicated for me. I mention this to put it in context how daunting this is when your new and not naturally knacky at computers.
From other posts I understand that people on P.I. prefer to use the url method than the, “Add image to post”, link in P.I. itself. I have looked at the critque forums and I agree that this the url method is much more adaptable and better to look at.

So I have learned somthing over these last fwe days, and again thanks to all those who have helped and if anyone else in my position has benefited from my posts in the last fwe days well then it was well worth it.

Just wondering if you baught elements 7?
Can you bring photos directly from there to here? I’d dearly like to.
Have you used showcase in the the sharing section to upload onto P.I.
Did you try to buy premier elements 7 too? We did. The trial version worked but the real version never downloaded even though we have a code for it etc????? Adobe have not been overly helpful either.

I know this is an old thread So I hope you recieve these questions.

    THANKS

I’m going to take a break now. My brain can only take so much computer stuff in one go!!!!!!
The pics I’ve posted so far are of our first born son, Kevin; a Cormorant, (a favourite of my wife’s not mine); and Christmas tree decorations. The baby socks are embroided using Kevin and Luke’s maternanal great grandmother’s thread.

I’m getting the message that people think it is better to use URL addresses from flickr than use the, “photoimage”, site from the “Add image to post”, link beloow the text box. If that is so why is this link there? Also what is so good about the flicker system than the photoimage system, whrn it comes to P.I.

If anybody has used Elements they may have used, “Showcase”, to share photos on line. It is easy to use from elements can it be used to get the URL address the same as flickr is used??????????????????

To share my state of mental tierdness with you can anybody tell me

    WHAT DOES URL STAND FOR???????????????

    Ok what’s going on here.

Just as I finnished the last text I saw the, “Add image to post”, at the bottom of the text box. This seemed to give me a selection when I clicked on the, “browse”, link. Is that the right way to do it????????? No one seems to mention this on the other threads????????
I’m going to try it again, probably wont work this time????????

I have followed the directions in the previous posts as you can see from the edits, but it still didn’t work?? :(
I think the problem is that I didn’t resize the photos first by 800 0n the long side. What exactly does that mean and why should you have to do it? Can P.I. only handel files of a certain size?
I am new to flickr to and not finding it easy to pick the photos I want. It all comes up as files and then not only about half of the photos or less are there.
Is it possible to upload the photos directly from my Photoshop Elements 7 organiser straight onto into flickr.
Is anyone aware of photoshops online photo sharing package, “Showcase”. It is much easyer to use from PSE 7 than flickr. All you need is for it to have a URL for it to be posted here, correct??????

Sorry to be such an ignoramus.

A once in a life time oppertunity these days.

Well hello to all who have replied to my post.
I feel very honured and encouraged by the replies that I have been given.
Going by the amount of other people who have also viewd the thread and not made
a post I suspect that there have been plenty of people who are in the same position as me.

There are lots of things to consider in making a carrer change. Mostly, why and
what effect will it have on the rest of your life.

The why has been relativley simple in the context of this thread i.e.
my desire to leave my current job.
It is soul destroying to be in a job that once had alot of purpose for you and
for it now to be a millstone around your neck. The purpose of my inital post was
to sus out the realisim of the dream that I could make a carrer out of somthing
that I love doing and that I may possibly be good at, given the oppertuinity of
plenty of training in whatever form.
So perhaps it is a get out of jail free card I want more so than to become a great
photograher, (now that is being overly negative about myself). What ever way you
look at it, taking up photography professionally just because you dislike your current
job probably isn’t very sound, and if the experience of professional photography
didn’t live up to expectations, then I’d be a bitter old man before my time.

As for the effect on the rest of my life, well financially it could be a disaster.
Marriage wise????? Child rearing wise????? Money is a good thing to have, it is
the root of all square meals etc. I went on a two day week because I believe that a
parent should be invoved in their childs life consistently, at least for the first year.

I guess where I’m going with this is that I will be keeping the regular job for the
forseeable future  if not specifically the one I currently have :) .
However I do intend to work on improving my ability to take photos. If I’m in a
job/carrer that I am unhappy with then I need somthing outside of that and my
family to give me a sense of, “there is more to life than this”, now I love my wife
and Children and they do come first, but you know what I mean don’t you??

If by the time my children are less of a full time commitment & my photography is
up to scratch who knows what would happen?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the course thing. I accept that experience is the best training and that
professional qualifications are not needed to make money. How though will I go
    about getting that experience?

I’d feel awkword following around another photographer, like I was in the way.
Then also I would feel she/he wouldn’t teach everything. In my experience of a camera
club a fwe years ago, I feel other photographers are very unlikely to share their
    secrets with you

    COMPETITION—-.
So I may well do the G.C.D. course because I know if I work on my own I will get sucked
into family commitments and I will not practice enough. A correspondance course I would’t
like because you need real people conection with photography, I think.

Any way I’m tiered and I’m rambeling. Again thanks for all the feedback. It has greatly encouraged me.

I will try to get activley involved in this site. My experience so far has been good,
and who knows I may learn somthing?

Well Kevin, thanks for the honesty.
I guess in my current job I know I am burnt out. I work directly with people
and well I feel it is probably very obvious to those who know me. I have been
there for now 8 years. Perhaps I could unhappily continue there for a while, mainly
because I work only two days, 13 hours each. I don’t want to do that and I guess I belive life should not have that type of unhappiness in it.
However as I write the 9 o’clock news is on with the usuall happy stuff.
In my initall post I said I needed to do some serious training etc and that my research
so far has led me to Griffith College Dublin, where they provide a 1 year course.
I can do this at night, 3 nights a week and still do my hours for work, and have
my two boys cared for. If I wanted I could do another 2 years after that. I could
do it as a day course and have less time pressure but more financial pressure.
Does that type of time frame sound sensible considering the current situation?

As a general rule do photographers generally have professional qualifications?
How do professional photographers train-up to that standard? Is it more of an
apprenticeship where you just follow another photographer around for years ao
is it a case of just building it up yourself, trial and error?

Thanks for the sincerity of your reply.
