I didn’t find an assistant but I completed the project solo. It was a little more difficult, particularly worrying about the light stand being blown over in the wind.

It was picked up by thejournal.ie where it was well received. Links below.

I’m doing a completely different set of images to the street project which was far from upbeat. This set is with the subject’s permission which makes it portraiture and it’s very optimistic in nature.

This does work does not pay now or in the future. Assistants will be credited if it gets published. I’ve said everything that needs to be said above regarding not paying.

    John,

Firstly, using the ‘N’ word does nothing for your argument. It just distracts from the point you are trying to make. Was your point about race? No. We’re in Ireland talking about photography. Lets use vocabulary thats in context.

Secondly: The very first post I ever made to this forum was in December 2008 offering my services for free
    https://www.photographyireland.net/wedding-assistant-for-free-t24376.html

I got the experience of working for two talented photographers (Hu O’Reilly and Eric Savoie) who generously gave me an insight into the industry and I’m very grateful for the help they gave me. I cynically offered my assistant services for free and they graciously accepted. Everybody wins.

I’ve since earned a degree in photography and am now a working photographer. I’m now in a position to offer experience to someone else. Why would you have a problem with that? Why is it even your business?

It’s a personal documentary project. It may find a home at some stage in the future but for the moment it’s personal.

It’s actually an DHR with 3 exposures. I went easy on the HDR because I think it’s over-done these days. I should have gotten an extra shot at lower exposure because there is still a little clipping of the highlights.

Thanks to all who replied and viewed my post. I have already recieved one offer to assist in mid february which I am very happy about. I’m still taking offers as I want to gett as much experience as possible. Phil…while PL insurance is nice I think it will only reduce the amount of offers I get. When I go solo I will need it though. ANy idea of cost?

My goal is to get some experience rather than make money in the short-term. The fact that I am not charging doesn’t mean I don’t value my work either. I just want to hit the ground running and get as many weddings under my belt as possible. If I’m in demand half-way into the season and my shots feature in the albums regularly I would consider charging. The ultimate goal is to be a solo professional with a quality portfolio. When that happens I have no intentions on competing on price. If I need to stay out of town I would ask for expenses. I have no intentions unintentionally lowering the market price for photographers. Consider it a mini internship!
