This looks very nice, I like the colours, not too overbaked.
Have you tried to correct the distortion? photoshop is very good at it. I guess you would lose a lot of the shot if you did.
For me the geometrical distortion is a bit much, but still it adds drama and doesn’t jar as it is very symmetric.
Very good start, I like that you are looking for photos with various elements to tell a story.
#3 I don’t like so much as the poster is the most important element and it does interact with the scene, just overwhelms it, so it becomes a shot of a poster.
You are going for the hardest style of street photos. Proper street photographers seem to spend a huge amount of time and energy on it, good luck!
I prefer to stay with street snapshots myself.
I like the first one here Alan,
as for the general style I’m a big fan of pictorialism, and would like to dabble in those types of shots.
I guess one could classify Codrin’s photos as pictorialism, many of them look really good.
A friend of mine (a leica snob so not easily pleased) loves the Mamiya 7, and you can get a converter to to 135 panoramas, interesting results. Seems to be a great camera.
I have a Hasselblad it’s lovely but I think the Rollei would be easier to carry around.
One thing is that the Hasselblad is a kit with many options of lenses, interchangeable backs, viewfinders and extension tubes for macro etc (but only if you wish to lug them around, (and spend a fortune)).
The real Martin’s does some rally great stuff with his Rollei (eg current flickr photo), you should ask him about it.
Yes, lovely shot.
With kids you might need a hanky in one and the camera in the other, he needs a bit of a clean up :)
Of course then you might not have got the great pensive mood.
There is an update, the British Foreign Office has changed it’s view in the last few hours to: “nationals should consider leaving Tokyo”.
However their scientific committee’s has not changed it’s opinion that there is no danger of health issues in the worst case.
You need to put the link to the image not the webpage between the tags.
You can find it just above the photo in flickr in the “share this” menu.
You can also get a full set of code there (select the “BB code” option) to get code that links back into flickr from PI.
I’m obviously monitoring the situation carefully, (and disregarding a lot of sensationalising in the press). Twitter has been a great resource to help find good info.
There is of course a huge human tragedy in the north of Tokyo, it is very sad. That should be the main story.
We are still getting significant shakes, you can see from here http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
that we are getting constants aftershocks, since the big one about 35 of at least magnitude 6, which is not a weak earthquake.
Shops are fairly bare in Tokyo, but people are calm.
Coincidently I just finished the previous Tuesday a book about hype/fear used in the media and politics, and how human evaluate risk, and how one should evaluate risks. Hopefully that has helped me make the right decision.
Staying put for now.
But as with all my comment & critique it comes with the implicit prefix: “Now I’m no expert but this is what I think..”
But the tsunami toll will be huge.
The quake was 8000 times the strength of the NZ quake, the aftershocks were almost continuous on the day and even today, 2 days later, there are still some over magnitude 6.
I’m over here, I’m well and my wife and her family are fine.
I’m in Tokyo, just arrived back in from Ireland yesterday morning and was asleep on the sofa when it woke me.
It was unusual as it lasted a long time about 2 mins and got stronger. There were aftershocks all day, and even today.
My apartment building is quite flexible so it sways quite a bit, there was stuff tossed on the floor, the gas meter cuts off the gas automatically. But no major damage.
But here we are far from the real carnage, it is horrifying to see what happened up north. And then there are 2 nuclear reactors in danger of meltdown. Hopefully the worse is over.
