    Thank you all for the advice.

    I ended up going with the 450D, just got it a few days and am still reading the manual!

    Your tips are much appreciated, specially RE portraits and landscape shots, what to read etc.

    When I get to grips with the hardware I will post some shots for people to comment.

    I am still learning the basics and have just ordered (but not yet received) a Canon 450D (with 17-55mm & 75-250mm lenses). This is the type of composition I would like to learn how to take properly; clear subject with soft background. I would even prefer a more “extreme” version, where the subject’s face is clearly in focus with the rest of their body blurred (ie. angle of photo taken from above the subject or similar).

    Can you offer me some tips on how to achieve this type of result?
