I asked them and I got to know two things:
1. they hardly get Agfa B&W film, so there is no point in choosing any Agfa film
2. they develop Kodak T-Max film by hand with Kodak T-Max developer, nice! :-)
The F90 lacks some features the F90X but I have no clue about the differences. My father is the one who knows, he choose the F90X for professional (mainly weddings) use after having reviewed both options.
I haven’t tried Conn’s yet, have you tried developing a roll there?
There are indeed a lot of variables, but if you stick to the same lab and ask always for exactly the same, most of those variables will be under your control.
I remember you reported inconsistency when developing you rolls at Gunn’s, I think I know why. If you ask for low resolution scan you get around 2MP scans and the film grain will be more visible due to the low resolution, but if you ask for high resolution you get 7MP scans with little noise that you can reduce and get nice results. We already did talk about this and at the end I posted posted my conclusion.
Hopefully I will finish a T-max 400 this weekend and we’ll see the results by the next weekend, in the meantime you can see I have already gotten someniceresults.
There is a F90X body for sale in John Gunn Camera Shop, I think it’s ?300 or ?350, and it seems to be in good condition. I didn’t know how to use this camera until I stole it from my father :D and I still don’t know how to use most of it but it’s pretty easy to use. So far I have learned how to switch shooting modes, lock AF & AL, switch metering modes and rewind the roll :D
I was an unconditional manual cameras’ lover but this body is really nice, I think that if you get one in good condition for ?300-350 it’d be a very good choice.
My first roll in Gunn’s has the same huge-grain look, but I’m not sure if it’s actual grain or CCD noise on the scan, because there are a lot of pixels with opposite values to the ones aside them. My father –and master– recommended me a Gaussian selective blur with parameters blur radii = 3 and delat max = 176, which I don’t know myself what exactly is but it seems to work pretty well to fight the grain effect, look at this examples: original and filtered. A few more are now the latest on my Flickr collection.
There is indeed a beautiful pleasure in seeing the image appear in front of your very eyes when you do your prints, and the only smelly part I can remember (I did quite a lot of lab around 10-12 years ago) is when I was poor enough to use vinegar in water instead of stopping bath :-D
I will probably bring some equipment from Tenerife unless any of you can tell me how much a 1-roll developing tank is here.
If you want something really smelly try (NO, DON’T TRY IT) to put the paper developer into the fixer bottle xDDDD
You’re right, they use Rodinal Special, I recall it was Rodinal Something but could not remeber the second part of the name, sorry for the confusion O:-)
I agree that developing you own is a good idea, but provided how houses are built here how can I get a dark room suitable for film? No way with these windows, I’m still fighting with the sun trying not to wake up one hour before my alarm clock sounds :-D
ciaran, as far as the lady told me they have only two scan sizes: 1.6MB and 20MB (MB, not MP) both in JPEG.
The first one is similar to my 8MP camera and the second one must be for really big files and I don’t think it’s worth for me,
if I wanted a big print I’d go there for one made in a enlarger or I’d do it myself (provided I find a lab for that).
The roll I left yesterday is my first Ilford roll ever, I’m more used to T-Max, but I think the grain size could be
because they use Agfa Rodinal instead of Ilford or Kodak film developers.
Let’s see how it goes for me with an Ilford FP4+ 125 and a T-Max 400, I’ll appreciate your feedback on your own rolls.
I’ve left my first roll in Gunn’s after getting lost and gravitating towards it instead of findint it.
After the long talk I had with the lady I’m pretty confident I’ll be happy with the result.
Photolabs in Lennox St. was closed so I’m afraid I can’t go there when they are open.
